Standard Job DescriptionSenior Communications Assistant Organizational Setting and Work Relationships The Senior Communications Assistant is normally supervised by a Communication Officer or other position as decided by the senior management in the area of responsibility. The supervisor provides the incumbent with regular guidance. The incumbent will have frequent contacts involving the exchange of a wide range of information with colleagues within UNHCR as well as media, international organizations, academic institutions and private individuals. All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. In addition, staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core, functional, cross-functional and managerial competencies and UNHCR¿s core values of professionalism, integrity and respect for diversity. Duties - Regularly monitor media and local situation regarding UNHCR. - Follow-up on administrative and logistical arrangements to organise press briefings and other events, such as workshop and conferences. - Contribute to the production of information materials for public awareness campaigns and for the preparation of in-house bulletins, newsletters and information kits by contributing to articles, reports and other information gathered from various sources. - Liaise with printers concerning brochures and publications published by the office. - Draft routine correspondence and texts for the office's website and maintain information databases. - Compile and distribute a daily news clipping service. - Distribute press statements and similar information to media, to other offices locally as well as to Headquarters. - Maintain up-to-date filing system and appointments diary. - Perform other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Years of Experience / Degree Level For G5 - 2 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 1 year relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher Field(s) of Education Not applicable. Desired Candidate ProfileThe Senior Communications Assistant is normally supervised by a Communication Officer or other position as decided by the senior management in the area of responsibility. S/he will have frequent contacts involving the exchange of a wide range of information with colleagues within UNHCR as well as media, international organizations, academic institutions, and private individuals. The incumbent will be responsible for developing relationships with local media and key stakeholders. S/he will support the Communication officer in the preparation of press releases, reports and web-stories, with demonstrable written skills in both English and Bengali. S/he will have experience in taking photographs/video and possess editing skills. The person must have good digital design skills to prepare branded documents, such as posters, flyers, factsheets and other documents.

The position requires experience producing and publishing content for social media, as the person will support the communication team to enhance the reach of UNHCR social media accounts. S/he will be capable of multi-tasking and working to tight deadlines, in a fast-paced environment and as part of a team. As the incumbent will be working closely with refugees, knowledge of the Rohingya language would be considered an asset. A clear understanding of the Rohingya crisis is essential, while previous experience working with UN/NGOs on this situation would be preferred.

Duties:
- Support the implementation of communications strategies for countries, situations and special projects within the area of responsibility; help identify thematic priorities and target audiences to meet UNHCR's global, regional and country-level communications objectives of leading the narrative, generating empathy and mobilizing action for forcibly displaced and stateless people.
- Provide photography and videography support to UNHCR units, including the photo directory and for the purpose of multiple information products.
- Monitor news and popular trends to insert UNHCR's messaging into ongoing conversations; identify key moments for proactive communications.
- Help maintain existing databases.
- Help forge strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations who can help produce and promote UNHCR content, activities and messaging as well as provide research insights to improve communications.
- Support the development of content to lead the narrative on forced displacement and show UNHCR's impact (e.g. interviews, press releases, flagship reports, speeches), create emotive storytelling to generate empathy (e.g. stories, multimedia content) and mobilize action by signposting concrete steps people can take to help refugees (e.g. digital diplomacy, action-driven campaigns, fundraising).
- Assist in research, preparation, editing and production of professional media, audiovisual, design and communications materials for target audiences and ensure their timely dissemination via UNHCR's communications channels, ensuring highest quality standards.
- Support the content production and publication for social media platforms.
- Continually maintain and upgrade communications skills, keeping abreast of emerging platforms and tools, and systematically reviewing media impact results and other measurement tools for learning purposes.
- May be required to assist in implementation of campaigns, events and other initiatives in support of UNHCR's strategic objectives, including its need for a leading share of voice on refugee and related matters.
- May be required to undertake missions and field trips with media, donors and other official visitors in support of UNHCR and its work.
