1. General Background

Established in December 1950, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect and assist refugees and other persons of concern. UNHCR has helped tens of millions of people to restart their lives and works in 123 countries to care for the worldโ€™s millions of refugees, internally displaced and stateless persons.

Within UNHCRโ€™s Division of External Relations (DER), the Private Sector Partnership Service (PSP), based at the UN City in Copenhagen, supports the Agencyโ€™s global collaboration with the private sector through its network of fundraisers and national associations in multiple operations located in the different regions, (i.e., Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, and Africa (โ€œthe PSP networkโ€). The current PSP Global Strategy has the vision to grow PSP into a service capable of generating $1bn annually and focuses on both individual giving (IG) and private partnerships and philanthropy (PPH) and identifies priority markets and regions. PSPโ€™s Private Partnerships and Philanthropy Section (PPH) builds and manages partnerships with corporations, foundations, and High Net Worth Individuals (collectively called โ€œPPH donorsโ€). A subset of the PSP Global Strategy and within wider organizational changes within UNHCR is aimed at guaranteeing that the Organization has the structure and resources in place to effectively respond to the challenges of forced displacement.

The Partnership Support Unit (PSU) constitutes an integral support role within PSP aimed to assist with strengthening cooperation with key institutional stakeholders namely the UNHCR Regional Bureaux, Field Operations and Divisions to support PSP fundraising opportunities. The PSP Support Officer is an integral part of the PSU multi-functional team. PSP has identified a need for predictable and systematic support for the development of fundraising propositions as well as for credible reporting to donors. Thus, the PSP Support Officer will be expected to contribute to PSP's capacity to realize the ambitious targets set for private sector fundraising in both the immediate and long term. The PSP Support Officer will support fundraisers and relationship managers along the donor journey by proactively producing and/or edit fundraising materials in line with the needs and interests of the PSP fundraisers while remaining aligned with the UNHCR brand and key messages on content.

2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

The aim of this role is to develop proactive fundraising materials and provide PPH fundraisers with additional tools to raise funds. Under the supervision of the Team Lead, the PSP Support Officer will closely work with PSU regional focal points and collaborate with relevant teams in DER as well as other Divisions/Sections as needed to develop fundraising materials and propositions to support the PSP networkโ€™s fundraising efforts on themes such as Gender Equality and Gender Based Violence response, Education, Emergencies as well as other priorities based on an agreed work plan. Support for annual reporting will also be required. On emergencies, the incumbent will support the development of emergency fundraising materials and impact reports for the PSP network as required.

In particular, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

โ€ข Keep abreast, especially through a thematic lens, of UNHCRโ€™s programmes and priorities that could appeal to PPH donors in a range of markets and contexts.
โ€ข Undertake research and write high quality fundraising materials (e.g. fundraising packs, funding proposals, pitch decks, case for support, key messages) on priority areas, working closely with PSU regional focal points to identify budget space and programmatic activities for fundraising opportunities.
โ€ข Create and refresh fundraising materials that meet the PSP networkโ€™s needs across income streams (Corporate, Private Philanthropy, and Foundations) and markets.
โ€ข Support writing/editing of donor impact reports for emergencies and develop other emergency fundraising material as required.
โ€ข Use UNHCR systems, tools and platforms to access data and reporting, stories, photographs and case studies to feed into the development of fundraising materials and reports.
โ€ข Respond to thematic requests and queries from fundraisers in the PSP network in a timely manner by closely coordinating with the relevant PSU regional focal points and the Team Lead.
โ€ข Ensure compliance with UNHCR policies, procedures and SOPs that impact fundraising throughout the contribution management cycle.
โ€ข Attend meetings and represent PPH/PSU as required.
โ€ข Perform other tasks in support of the Team Lead and Head of PSU as required.

3. Qualifications and Experience

a. Education

โ€ข University degree in International Relations, Public Relations, Marketing/Media/Journalism, Economics, Social Sciences, or related fields.

b. Work Experience

โ€ข At least 6 years of demonstrated progressive professional experience (5 years with a graduate degree equivalent of a masterโ€™s and 4 years with doctorate equivalent of a PhD) in fundraising, donor relations and/or private sector engagement with corporates, private philanthropists and/or foundations
โ€ข Direct experience in fundraising/private sector engagement with corporates, private philanthropists and/or foundations is essential
โ€ข Experience with developing strong donor proposals and reports, as well as other fundraising assets tailored to a private sector audience is essential
โ€ข Ability to build effective working relationships with key internal and external project stakeholders at all levels of seniority is essential
โ€ข Excellent ability to understand and present complex/technical issues to PPH donors, presenting the organization and diverse operations in an appealing and concise manner, and understanding how to reconcile the needs of the organization with those of the donor
โ€ข Ability to translate technical language into accessible donor-friendly language and match donor interests with UNHCRโ€™s programmes and budget requirements
โ€ข Experience of working with multiple stakeholders across multiple locations and coordinating processes that require engagement of multiple teams
โ€ข Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with strong interpersonal, networking and relationship-building skills
โ€ข Experience with emergency fundraising is desirable
โ€ข Knowledge of UNHCR's mandate, programmes, budget and planning, and operational arrangements will be considered an asset.

โ€ข Familiar with prospect research tools (open source and others).

4. Location and Conditions

The successful candidate will be based in the UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This position is initially up to the end of the year with possibility of extension subject to budget availability and overall performance of the incumbent. It is a full-time role starting from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
