Position Summary:
PIH Malawi is seeking a positive, aspirational, and inspirational leader to build upon the organizationโs growth over the last 16 years. As the organizational leader of PIH Malawi, the Executive Director ensures that we deliver on our commitment to improving health care outcomes in Malawi, while also identifying ways in which to not only live up to our existing commitments, but to also grow them. The Executive Director leads a multi-disciplinary management team of experts in formulating and implementing short, medium and long term organizational strategic plans.
The Executive Director is responsible for guaranteeing that the mission and values of PIH are being upheld across the organization. This pursuit is of equal importance to the oversight of organizational systems and policies. The Executive Director builds coalitions within our organization to bring daring aspirations to fruition. The Executive Director must be willing to be the face of our organization, representing our work internally and externally: to government stakeholders, donors, and other partner organizations. The relationship with the Ministry of Health and other related ministries has strengthened as PIH Malawi has taken on more work. This partnership is critical to the success of our organization, and the next leader must be able to diplomatically and expertly navigate multiple layers of partnerships. With a growing operating budget, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring there is a robust pipeline of funding to support our commitments to both patients and staff. Additionally, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring PIH Malawi is supported by a strong foundation of financial controls, and effective donor/grant stewardship.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer, through the Chief Officer, Leadership Development and Engagement, and Board of Trustees, the Executive Directorโs key responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following: โ
- Strategic leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the site strategic plan in line with national priorities positioning the site for continuous improvement in clinical excellence and patient-centered care delivery through Social Medicine, long-term growth and continued partnership with the Government.
- Oversee research and ensure that programs generate evidence for Global Health equity and the practice of Social Medicine.
- Leverage the healthcare delivery platform for the development of Global health workforce in the context of the local setting as well as the wider milieu of OnePIH
- As the vision bearer for OnePIH in Malawi, identify opportunities for replication of the PIH model and strategy collaborating with cross site resource mobilization teams to raise resources and build a robust funding pipeline.
2. Strategic partnerships
- Develop, advance, and monitor collaborations and partnerships with the Ministry of Health, district health management teams, health facility and community leaders.
- Lead the accompaniment of the public sector including policy advocacy and technical assistance.
- Foster collaborations and partnerships with academic institutions and other partners that facilitate the advancement of the PIH agenda and strategy.
3. Operational management - Ensure the organization meets all legal requirements, financial and procurement best practices and ensure that these processes are regularly audited to ensure a high standard of conduct including regular risk management plans.
- Create and uphold systems of transparency and accountability around shared OnePIH strategic policies, priorities, including non-negotiable commitments.
- Oversee and ensure proper and appropriate safety and security including emergency action measures for staff, in line with PIH operating standards and in collaboration with PIH safety and security staff.
4. Human capital management - Ensure siteโs proper staffing; advance workforce planning as well as staff development, including succession planning opportunities.
- Hire, develop and manage siteโs staff, focusing on building teamโs synergy and high performance.
- Lead by example to ensure positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment.
- Identify opportunities, including cross site collaborations, to leverage staff capacity for development and improvement.
5. OnePIH leadership - Actively participate in the OnePIH Leadership Council and its subcommittees when so required including fostering a collegial and cross site collaborative culture.
6. Proximal representation - Serve as the key spokesperson, model and advocate for the PIH vision, mission and values and represent PIH to the broader community in the host country and beyond.
7. Any other assigned duties as required.
Competencies and Attributes:
- Personal qualities: Through actions and behavior demonstrate understanding of the PIH mission to provide a preferential option for the poor in healthcare, with a vision of health as a human right and social justice; self-drive and initiative, compassion, resilience, flexibility, objectivity, innovation, humility and a high moral code.
- Leadership skills: ability to lead collaboratively, yet able to make robust decisions as necessary; equanimity in dealing with unexpected situations; capability for hands-on involvement in our work, visioning, modeling, problem solving and decision making, coaching, empowering, team building, self-development, spirit of OnePIH/cross-site collaboration and organization representation and resource mobilization.
- People management: excellent oral and written communication, including diplomatically handling complex political and interpersonal situations, coordination, collaboration, supervisory control, staff appraisal and development and community relations.
- Operational management: planning, budget and economic management, compliance, evaluation and control, risk/liability management, emergency preparedness and management, facility and infrastructure management, board support and development
Qualifications and Experience:
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible managerial experience working in health in rural settings at least 5 years of which must in a strategic/executive leadership role
- Knowledge of the Malawian health system preferred.
- Experience in collaborating with government officers and health workers.
- Fluency in at least one local language desired
- Willingness to live in Neno
- Minimum commitment of 5 years.
- Advanced academic degree: MD/MB BS with specialization, MPH, MBA, MPP, MPA, MGHD or similar
