Our Work In Sierra Leone:
Partners In Health Sierra Leone (PIHSL) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.
Position Overview
The Hygienist ensures that medical instruments and supplies used in healthcare environments are properly sterilized and safe to use. They operate sterilization equipment, monitor the process, and inspect sterilized items for quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Acquiring, distributing, and charging for all disposable supplies and patient rental equipment
- Preparing, assembling, and packaging all medical equipment and instruments for surgery and other hospital departments including the restocking of code carts and isolation carts using the exchange cart system
- Sterilizing all reusable equipment, supplies, and instrumentation, and maintaining and operating Central Sterile equipment according to established protocols
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of sterile technique, care of instrument instruments, and stocking supplies needed for surgical cases
- Takes responsibility for the decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment
- Handle transport, and store sterile equipment and pull supplies and instruments for surgical cases using the case cart system.
- Cleans decontaminates instruments and equipment after each case according to hospital policy and procedure shown by the quality of instrument cleaning and steps followed in decontamination
- Utilizing Instrument Tracking System and Surgical Services Scheduling System (PIMS), as necessary
- Assist in the training of new sterilization technicians
- Participate in inventory control of sterilization supplies

Qualifications/Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions
- Musa be able to lift, stand, and stoop without physical restriction
- Conscientious in detail and grooming
- Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization techniques
- Ability to communicate effectively and pleasantly
- Minimum 1 year of recent central sterile experience
- Thorough knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques, infection control requirements, and a basic knowledge of medical/surgical procedure and terminology
- One year experience as an instrument room or operating room technician (preferred)
