Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Nordic Office is located in UN City in Copenhagen. The office is responsible for strategic partnerships including resource mobilisation, advocacy and communication in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Key partners include governments, parliamentarians, the media, civil society, the private sector, and other UN agencies.

Under the supervision of the Director of the UN Women Nordic Liaison Office, the communication and visibility intern at the UN Women Nordic Liaison Office, will gain aย deeper understanding of UN communication strategies and methods, as well as insight in global challenges and current gender equality efforts of the international community. The internship will provide excellent learning opportunities through participating in UN Womenโ€™s engagement with diverse stakeholders throughout the Nordic and Baltic regions, both internal and external to the UN, to advance gender equality worldwide. As part of a dynamic office, interns at UN Women are also part of the wider UN City community.

Description of Responsibilities

The internship will start on 15 January 2025 and end on 14 July 2025.ย 

Support the implementation of UN Womenโ€™s communication strategy through enhanced communication and visibility of UN Womenโ€™s work and results, including in particular visibility for core resources, through social media such as X and Linkedin to increase UN Womenโ€™s visibility in the Nordic countries, engage in a more dynamic conversation with UN Womenโ€™s Nordic partners, potential partners, civil society, as well as increase public awareness on issues related to gender equality and the rights of women and girls; Support the drafting of OpEds and other communication for the consumption of national audiences in the Nordic region, with the main aim to enhance visibility for results of the Nordic governmentsโ€™ investment in gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment; Support communication efforts and organize outreach activities with private sector and foundations, and set up meetings and events to promote and improve UN Womenยดs private sector cooperation; Assist in the preparation and planning of events taking place during the course of the internship; Monitor national media in Nordic countries on issues related to the work and mandate of UN Women and report on relevant media coverage; Support in the preparation and coordination of high-level visits of UN Women officials to the region, including drafting of briefing notes and talking points for UN Women officials; Participate in, and provide input to, joint advocacy and communication activities with UN sister organizations; Host visits and present UN Women to students and other visitors; Assist with inquiries from students and the public; Any other communication related tasks required.

In addition to the above the intern will have the following learning objectives for the duration of the internship:ย Gain insight on strategies and approaches used in UN Womenโ€™s communication and visibility work, strategies for establishing and maintaining partnerships with various stakeholders, and gain experience and understanding of the work of the UN system and UN Women.

Functional Competencies:

Interest in the work of UN Women and to the ideals of the UN Charter. Good knowledge of social media, media monitoring, and communication strategies and methods. Energetic self-starter with multi-tasking abilities and discipline with deadlines. Good knowledge of event planning.ย  Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Good computer skills (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams, Zoom). Good analytical skills. Ability to create, edit and present information in clear and presentable formats: online and offline Multimedia skills. Detail oriented.

Qualifications

Education:

University studies in one of the following disciplines: Media and Communication, Journalism, or equivalent. Meet one of the following:ย  Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a masterโ€™s programme, orย higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent); Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part; Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Language:

Proficient communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;ย  Proficient communication skills (written and oral) in a Nordic language are required; Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:ย 

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
