Position Overview:
The photographer is a key position in the communications department responsible for making photographs that document and highlight PIHโ€™s mission through our patients, staff, and programs. Under the leadership of the Communication Manager, the photographer will work with different departments and global marketing and communication team on a weekly basis to plan and produce high quality photographs that will be used for different purposes including in reports, PIHโ€™s website, social media, posters, fundraising materials, and other communications efforts both in Lesotho and globally.   • Produce and edit high quality photographs as required by different projects and departments with regard to organizationโ€™s mission, work, communications goals, and intended audience(s)
  • Under the direction of the Communications Manager, plan content priorities and participate in pre-production to outline the role photography will play in content production.
  • Support the Videographer with production as needed.
  • Adhere to the standard file management practices set by PIH Marketing and Communications.
  • Maintain quality caption information and other metadata on all photographs.
  • Adhere to PIHโ€™s written informed consent policy at all times.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the PIH Marketing and Communications team, including the attendance in recurring cross-site meetings as directed by the PIH Lesotho Communications Manager.
  • Collaborate virtually with other photographers across PIH globally, sharing skills feedback, and ideas.
  • Take leadership in finding creative solutions in visual narratives, educating colleagues on the importance of photography and the role it plays as needed.
  • Utilize Canto, PIHโ€™s digital asset management system, with the support of the Multimedia Asset Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in collaboration with the supervisor. Qualifications:
    • Degree in photography, journalism, mass communication, or equivalent experience.
    • An online photography portfolio that illustrates technical, narrative, and creative skill.
    • Proficiency in Photo Mechanic, Lightroom, Bridge or equivalent photo editing software.
    • Experience with caption writing.
    • Extreme sensitivity to issues of informed consent, privacy and trust involved in developing and sharing patient stories and images that will become public.
      • Ability to work independently and as a team, managing multiple priorities within deadlines.
        • Flexibility with frequent changes in plans and priorities as needs and opportunities arise.
        • Exemplary interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively and respectfully with staff, patients, and community members.
        • Familiarity with the NPPA Code of Ethics. Other desired qualities
          • Interest in social justice strongly desirable.
          • Ability and willingness to travel on bumpy rural roads for long periods of time.
          • Strong attention to detail.
          • Photo toning and color-correction (proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and understanding of raw formats).
          • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or other graphic design software.
          • Strong interest in social justice.
          • Familiarity with and interest in global health and/or nonprofit development. NB: Submission of a portfolio is a must.
