Position Overview
The Healthcare Support staff provides essential support to nurses, midwives, and clinicians in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to mothers and newborns within the maternity and neonatal units. The role involves assisting with basic nursing tasks, maintaining cleanliness and infection prevention standards, supporting patient comfort, and ensuring efficient ward operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care Support
- Assist nurses and midwives in providing care to mothers and newborns.
- Support mothers with personal hygiene, mobility, feeding, and basic comfort measures.
- Help position and prepare patients for examinations, deliveries, or procedures.
- Monitor and report any changes in a patientโs condition to the supervising nurse or midwife promptly.
- Assist in newborn care activities such as cleaning, weighing, and recording basic information under supervision.
2. Clinical Support Duties
- Ensure timely provision of clean linens, sterile instruments, and supplies.
- Assist in transferring patients within the ward or to other departments as needed.
- Support in maintaining a clean and safe ward environment, including proper waste disposal and infection prevention practices.
- Prepare delivery rooms, postnatal beds, and neonatal spaces before and after procedures.
- Assist with restocking of supplies and equipment inventory management.
- And any other duty assigned to the nursing aids
3. Infection Prevention and Control
- Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, including hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Participate in ward cleaning routines, disinfection, and safe handling of waste materials.
- Support the safe collection and disposal of soiled linens and medical waste.
4. Communication and Teamwork
- Maintain respectful and compassionate communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, midwives, and doctors to ensure efficient patient care.
- Uphold confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.
5. Documentation and Reporting
- Assist in recording basic patient information such as vital signs, intake/output, and delivery details as directed.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in logbooks or patient charts.
- Report any incidents or safety concerns promptly to the nurse in charge.
- Other duties as delegated to you by your line manager that fall within the scope of work and role level.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completed Secondary School Education (WASSCE) or equivalent.
- Certificate in Nursing Aide Training or Health Aide Course from a recognized institution (is preferable)
- Minimum of 1โ2 years of experience working in a hospital or healthcare facility, preferably in a maternity or neonatal unit.
- Knowledge of basic nursing care, hygiene, and infection prevention procedures.
Skills and Competencies:
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful toward mothers and newborns.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work under supervision.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and teamwork.
- Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
