As part of the German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the Project Development Programme (PDP) promotes climate-friendly energy solutions in over 18 partner countries. It develops implementable renewable energy projects, especially solar photovoltaic (PV), by identifying local companies, assessing their energy demand, and proposing a business case. Once the local companies are convinced to invest in the project, an introduction to potential German suppliers is made. After analysing the market dynamics and the challenges, PDP together with other GIZ projects and the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network (AHK), develops appropriate solutions for developing the markets, promoting partnerships between German and local companies, and advancing specific renewables projects. 'Made in Germany' technologies and know-how of climate-friendly energy supply are in demand worldwide. Along with governments, more and more companies are becoming aware of the importance of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency to reduce dependence on fossil resources. It also plays a vital role in mitigating climate change and helps to reduce costs, thus increasing their competitiveness. The support is primarily aimed at German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and helps prepare, explore, enter, and secure new business opportunities in the developing markets. The support strategy of the German Energy Solutions Initiative is the result of continuous discussion and coordination with the German industry. Direct up-to-date information from the developing markets forms the basis for the annual review process and a further selection of the countries and support measures planning. The focus in sub-Saharan Africa is on Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Zambia, Senegal, in the Middle East on Jordan, and Lebanon, and in Southeast Asia on Cambodia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
