Terms of ReferenceUNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship at UNHCR Ankara.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. UNHCR leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. UNHCR works in collaboration with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other international partners to provide humanitarian assistance, advocate for refugees' rights, and find durable solutions for displaced populations.

UNHCRโ€™s core functions include ensuring the safety and well-being of refugees, advocating for their rights, ensuring access to rights and services and facilitating durable solutions.

Organizational Context:

The position is within the Protection Unit in Ankara. Under the overall guidance of an Associate Protection Officer and direct supervision of a Protection Associate. The purpose of the internship programme is twofold:
a) Primarily, provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical work experience related to their academic programme or future work in a field related to UNHCRโ€™s mission (e.g. international relations, international law, human rights, administration, public information, field work, etc.)
b) Secondly, to provide UNHCR offices with the assistance of qualified interns specialized in various professional fields.

The Position:

The candidate will be obtaining clerical and administrative support to the unit. Also, the position requires providing support to two Senior Protection Assistants on communication with persons of concern, partner NGOs, government counterparts and contracted service providers, and liaising with other units and field teams and performing other duties. To perform the mentioned roles, the candidate is expected to have good interpersonal skills, advance use of MS tools, be proficient in spoken and written English, be graduate or under graduate student in social sciences or related fields, and proactive, flexible and adaptable to change.

Duties and Responsibilities:

โ€ข Provide clerical and administrative support to the Protection Unit, including by assisting with data entry, archiving, and filing
โ€ข Assist the unit for translating documents and correspondence, supporting two Senior Protection Assistants on monitoring referrals of non-cash assistance requests through ticketing system, assisting the unit in preparation of meeting minutes as well as to assist in archiving and filing, preparing, and updating the lists.
โ€ข Perform other duties as required

Minimum qualifications required:

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
โ€ข Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
โ€ข Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

โ€ข Graduate or undergraduate student in social sciences or related fields
โ€ข Advance use of MS Office (MS Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
โ€ข Proficient in spoken and written English
โ€ข Previous experience working with civil society, NGOs or a UN agency preferred
โ€ข Proactiveness, flexibility and adaptability
โ€ข Excellent interpersonal skills
โ€ข Ability to work under pressure and manage stress efficiently

General Conditions:

The hiring office will provide interns who do not receive financial support from a third party (e.g., the university or government grant) a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (the Allowance), calculated in USD and normally payable in local currency via bank transfer.

It is a full/part-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Ankara.

Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period. UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to the medical insurance of interns. A copy of proof of valid medical insurance covering the period of the Internship Agreement is required by UNHCR. UNHCR does not cover the costs of medical evacuation of interns; therefore, interns working in locations other than their country of residence must ensure that their medical insurance covers emergency medical evacuation. Furthermore, the medical insurance selected by interns should provide the necessary geographical coverage for both accidents and illness.

Obtaining and renewing current visas and residence permits including all associated costs, are the primary responsibility of the intern. UNHCR may assist by providing supporting documentation if needed.

Status:

Interns are neither staff members under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations, nor officials within the meaning of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. Bilateral host country agreements with UNHCR may regulate the status of interns. Unless specifically accepted under a host country agreement, interns are subject to and must observe their obligations under local law, including laws relating to taxation and social security.

Duration:

Internships will initially be granted for a minimum period of two months, up to a maximum of six months. Upon the agreement of the intern and the manager, an internship may be extended up to a maximum total cumulative duration of eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships, provided that the eligibility criteria continue to be met. An intern may undertake multiple consecutive internship assignments as long as the total cumulative internship duration is not exceeded.
