FUNCTION:

The Project Officer - LTOH will be responsible for implementing project activities in Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces as envisioned in the project โ€œBuilding Resilience through Climate-smart Livestock Farming in Western Nepalโ€ under the GRAPE project. S/he will be responsible for the effective delivery of animal health and production technologies, knowledge, and skills to project participants. The Officer will promote climate-smart livestock farming measures for improving and transforming existing goat and dairy farming practices. S/he will work in close collaboration with the Heifer Nepal Program team, local government, farmersโ€™ groups, and Village Animal Health Workers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES: (including approximate percentage effort)

Strengthen capacity of goat and dairy farmers and associated value chain actors on climate-smart livestock farming measures (30%)

  • Identify and select farmer groups and/or cooperatives.
  • Collect baseline information including current climate-smart practices.
  • Develop a training curriculum and manual on climate-smart livestock farming measures.
  • Conduct training of trainers (ToTs) to veterinary technicians, village animal health workers (VAHWs) and lead farmers.
  • Conduct trainings for farmers on climate-smart livestock farming measures.

    Establish demonstration sites of climate-smart livestock farming (30%)

    • Provide technical support ensuring construction of demonstration sheds and collection centers, establishment of fodder/forage nurseries and water recycling system, installation of biogas and composting system, etc.
    • Collaborate with silage plants to upgrade their production capacity (quantity and quality).
    • Conduct exposure visits for farmers to the demonstration sites.

      Increased access of farmers to input and services to adopt climate-smart farming practices at farm level (20%)

      • Mobilize VAHWs for regular technical backstopping.
      • Organize business to business meetings between farmer groups/cooperatives and agrovets, feed company, biogas installation company, insurance company, BFIs, buyers and traders, etc.
      • Connect farmer groups/cooperatives with government services and subsidies.
      • Organize animal health camps at the municipality level.

        Support in creating an enabling environment for the adoption and upscaling of climate-smart farming measures (15%)

        • Organize project inception meetings involving municipality/rural municipality and local stakeholders.
          • Organize regular project review meetings with municipality/rural municipality and local stakeholders.
            • Organize project outcome sharing meetings.
              • Ensure periodic progress reporting in the prescribed format and timeline.

                May perform other job-related duties as requested (5%)

                QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

                • A bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent in Veterinary Science plus at least three (3) years of job-related experience
                • Prior experience in managing livestock projects as coordinator
