Introduction

MSF-Holland initiated the governance training to help new board members better understand their roles and responsibilities within the governance structure of MSF. From 2021 onwards, the governance training has become part of the movement-wide TIC project on Board Strengthening (Board Strengthening Project - BSP). The BSP is now part of the International Associative Team and funded by the International Board. The BSP Learning and Development Coordinator is embedded in MSF Sweden.

The MSF governance trainings are open to board members from across the movement, and board assistants and association coordinators are regular participants as well. The governance training is usually conducted by two governance training facilitators over a two-day course, online or face-to- face. The two facilitators will share the main responsibilities and tasks listed below. In addition to the main governance training, there are also sometimes requests from boards/councils for bespoke training. There can also be requests for trainings in other languages than English. Specialised topics may include risk management, conflict resolution, leadership, amongst other themes.

Facilitators for the requested trainings need to demonstrate specialised competence within the requested training area. These trainings can either be part of the main governance training or be a training session in its own. The facilitator(s) will work with the board and the BSP to determine whether to action the request by developing and delivering the requested training.

The governance trainings are a global training initiative and facilitator(s) can be required to hold face-to-face trainings in different countries. When possible, the location of the face-to-face trainings will be in geographical proximity to the facilitator(s) country of residence.
