Background

UNDP has operated in Ethiopia since 1981. Since then, UNDP has focused on providing Ethiopia with strategic support to build national capacity and enhance the countryโ€™s development results in the areas of poverty reduction and economic growth, democratic governance as well as climate-resilient development. UNDP is currently assisting the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) to overcome its structural challenges as it strives to become a democratic, peaceful and prosperous middle-income country. It supports a successful transition to democratic governance, address drivers of conflict to consolidate and build peace, foster enabling conditions for expanded job creation by the private sector (especially SMEs) and accelerate the transition to a green economy resilient to climate change. Gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment are embedded across all areas of work.

In concurrent to CPD (2020-2025), UNDP has also been investing to strengthen the capacity of key federal, and regional partners and support communities in Ethiopia on climate resilience, environment and energy interventions.

Objective:

The UNDP Ethiopia Country Office, Climate Resilient Environmental Sustainability Unit (CRES) is looking for an intern who is motivated, independent, and ready to learn from the works of the unit at UNDP Country Office in Addis Ababa. The Internship will offer graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP's work. The programme is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation. It gives students and recent graduates the opportunity to get a taste of UNDPโ€™s community and mission. The Intern is thus expected to participate in a variety of tasks and work with the different thematic areas along with the staff members and the Team Leader for the Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the CRESTeam Leader, and in close consultation with the PDRM Hub the Intern โ€“ M&E provides support on results-based planning, monitoring and evaluation and financial management from project initiation to close out for effective delivery of Programme/project implementation, ensuring effective operational management of projects and programmes and transparent utilization of financial resources. The Intern - M&E works in close collaboration with the respective CO Programme and Operations teams, PDRMH, DPRH, DCH and Implementing Partners in ensuring successful CO performance and compliance in programme management and finance.

The Intern - M&E, in coordination with programme staff and IPs, will ensure that there is adequate, up to date and systematically packaged data and information on programme/project results, and that they are shared among all partners and stakeholders. The Intern is expected to perform the following key duties and functions:

Assist in the preparation/ review /revision of the project log frame matrix/RF, particularly in the areas of performance indicators and their measurements.Support project document and initiation plans development processes, monitor implementation and revisions including project multi-year and annual work plans, issue logs, risk logs and environmental social screening for projects.Assist the development of project M&E plans and monitor and evaluate the implementation of the plan.Support to project planning, implementation, and operations (Annual work planning, regular physical and financial monitoring in line with UNDP corporate rule, regulation, and policies as well as national Program Implementation Manual/PIM/.Track performance: collect and analyze project progress data against indicator targets, project results), and adjust implementation processes to ensure the project is progressing towards the intended outputs and outcomes.Verify output progress and/or completion as per output verification template. Initiate and execute, in coordination with PDRM, output verification /field monitoring visits, and provide written feedback to implementing partners and UNDP on findings and proposed actions.Assist project /program reporting processes including review of financial expenditure and support on the ways to enhance delivery.Review all project reports to ensure that data provided is reliable and accurate and that target indicators are met, and explanations provided where indicators are not met.Assist on draft regular M&E project reports and in the preparation of project evaluation and/or review reports.Provide support to improve monitoring and reporting mechanism through revised monitoring and reporting framework, through collaboration with the unit team at CO level.Support on drafting of quarterly, annual and other reports required by UNDP and/or donor.Assist to ensure that project data, and risk registry are entered and updated on a timely basis.Assist and coordinate reporting on Climate and Environment portfolio (e.g., annual reports, progress reports, donor reports, annual reports, etc.).Assist and contribute to the preparation of project documents or concept notes based on the needs expressed by actors at national level, lessons learned and good practices.Facilitate knowledge building and management and provide support on keeping records of activities.Any other duties as required by the unit.

Required Skills and Experience

Interns are selected on a competitive basis and the following minimum qualifications are required:

Applicants must be enrolled (or have recently graduated from) in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a masterโ€™s programme, or higher) Or have recently graduated with a first-level university degree related to Economics, Business Management, Public Administration, Project Management or other relevant fields and must start the internship within one-year of graduation.Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.Ability to work for consecutive 6 months.Interest in working on climate and environment-related thematic areas.

Languages

Fluency in oral and written English and Amharic is required.
