Background

Mรฉdecins Sans Frontiรจres (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. These programmes are run through five operational centres. The Manson Unit, MSF UK and the Swedish Innovation Unit, MSF Sweden support our operations through innovation and research projects with the aim to improve our health programming.

The Assessment of current need

The Manson Unitโ€™s Sapling Nursery Programme supports MSF staff to explore, develop and test innovative new approaches to challenges in our projects, to ultimately give people better access to medical care. We are looking for an Innovation Project Facilitator consultant to support local teams to undergo all stages of an innovation project lifecycle including but not limited to exploration, ideation and testing. The Projects Facilitator(s) will provide hands-on technical and operational support where needed.

Objectives

The Project Facilitator will be responsible for supporting various project teams working under the Sapling Nursery support programme in identifying and developing appropriate design approaches to build on the initial ideation phase of the different innovation projects, and to support the team in developing viable prototype(s) to deliver their required objectives.

Requirements

  • Lead the project team through the whole (or parts of) the project life cycle, for at least two different projects. This includes but not limited to:

- synthesizing existing research efforts

- planning and co-facilitating design workshops

- trainings with project staff and other project stakeholders

- supporting design of research activities, including, ideation and early-stage prototyping.

  • Draw on insights from existing research and data collected through the project activities to support the development of best-fit approaches informed by person-centered care.
  • Conduct ideation sessions with multidisciplinary groups, including project representatives, stakeholders and technical experts to develop initial prototypes.
  • Plan and manage rapid testing and iteration of prototypes in the field to develop and finalise one- two concepts/ideas/ prototypes for the projects to pilot.
  • Present results to stakeholders in a concise manner at different stages of the process.
  • Support the development of operational guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)s as part of the overall project lifecycle from ideation to research to testing and prototyping.

Specific Deliverables

  • Support the project team through the initial feasibility and the needs assessment including design, development and delivery.
  • Produce studies which facilitate and synthesize the results to be shared with all the key stakeholders.
  • Support methodology including outline of the support strategies and all associated documentation to be developed and delivered within the first iteration of exploration as well as design and testing phase.
  • Support project team in developing solutions through ideation sessions.
  • Support the development of initial prototypes, delivery plans including training and content to guide locally recruited staff throughout the implementation process.
  • Support project teams in identifying additional support and expertise required and help coordinate the contribution.
  • Provide regular updates to all stakeholders.
  • Consolidate closure report detailing the successes, recommendations and feedback based on the pre-determined indicators produced and presented.
  • Ensure feedback received reviewed and is included in the final report.

Profile of consultant(s):

Essential:

  • A bachelorโ€™s degree (masterโ€™s degree preferred) or equivalent experience in design, public health, international development, social sciences, or relevant field.
  • Demonstrable strong project management skills and experience including, but not limited to, developing work-plans and budgets, budget management, delivering on time and within set budget.
  • Proven skills and experience in supporting remotely located teams in delivering projects in lower- and middle-income settings.
  • Excellent support skills, for aiding non-expert teams with complex projects in changing environments.
  • Previous experience working with teams whose main language is not English, or French.
  • Previous experience in building team skills and development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and community engagement approaches.
  • An in-depth understanding and knowledge of medical issues and challenges in humanitarian contexts.
  • Experience working in public health, NGOs and/or the social sector.
  • Fluent in English written and spoken.
  • Additional language used in context MSF works advantageous.

Desirable:

  • MSF (or equivalent) experience.
  • Knowledge and working proficiency of Microsoft 365 environment including Teams and SharePoint.
  • Previous experience of Human Centred Design approaches and methodologies
