Duty station: Dakar, Senegal
Duration of the internship: 6 months (September 2023 to February 2024)
Expected start date: September 1, 2023

Background information/Organizational Context
The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Unit in the UNHCR Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa (RBWCA) is looking for a full-time intern for a period of 6 months.
The RBWCA WASH Unit provides oversights and expertise to 12 Countries of Operation (COs) showing recent or ongoing WASH assistance to displaced population, namely refugees. Tchad, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria are the most prominent Operations with significant WASH programs, but Operations such as Ivory Coast, Togo or Central African Republic (CAR) recently demonstrated a renewed interest for WASH due to the development on ongoing emergencies.
Beside its direct support to COs, the RBWCA WASH Unit liaises with HQ WASH Unit and Technical Support Section (TSS), other regional counterparts, and the whole UNHCR WASH Community of Practice. At regional level, the WASH Unit interacts with different WASH regional stakeholders such as UNICEF, ICRC or INGOs and contribute to the overall thinking and positioning of the regional WASH Community of Practice. Additionally, the RBWCA WASH Unit has developed some specific expertise and know-how mainly in the fields of geophysics, drilling, pumping test and solarization, and is promoting related-trainings. With the development of new refugee crisis in Chad, CAR or the โ€œcoastal countriesโ€ (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin) and the increasing challenges related to climate change on displaced populations, the RBWCA WASH Unit intends to hire an intern to support its work.

โ€ข Draft background notes and do research in the field of WASH or WASH transversal issues with sectors such as LEI, CBI, Shelter, Environment/Climate change, Energy, Health, Development, Education, Protection, etc.
โ€ข Support coordination of the WASH Unitโ€™s work by providing logistical support for events/meetings, trainings and/or missions, writing up minutes of meetings, following up on important action points to ensure their completion, and tracking engagement with partners.
โ€ข Support the promotion of the RBWCA WASH strategy.
โ€ข Assist in the various day-to-day tasks.
โ€ข Develop other activities as needed.

The intern will
โ€ข Gain understanding and practical experience in WASH programming and monitoring throughout the WCA Region.
