Background/Context

The Communications and Advocacy section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist the services of a Graphic Design Consultant to support the production of visual assets, primarily for use on UN Womenโ€™s global social media channels.

The consultant will be reporting to the Social Media Specialist, and will be supported by the Administrative Assistant, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work

Under the supervision of the Social Media Specialist, the Visual Communication Consultant will be responsible for:ย 

Social Media Visual Communication (70 %)

Provide social media -first graphic design (e.g GIFs, infographics, illustrations, photo collages, quote cards, illustrated explainers) that are tailored to UN Women social media accounts (X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook). The designs should accurately reflect UN Womenโ€™s mandate and brand identity as well as those of special projects and initiatives.ย  Develop social media asset templates from scratch for use on all UN Women social media channels including at regional and country level. Make templates available on Canva for localization.ย  Work closely with the in-house photo editor and UN Women communications colleagues across the world to identify strong photos for use on social media. Edit and resize images and prepare quote cards and creative visuals that are tailored for UN Women corporate social media platforms. Work with the in-house social media video producer to guide and support the incorporation of graphic elements into social media videos and to ensure consistent expression of UN Womenโ€™s brand identity on social media videos. Develop infographics, data cards, illustrated explainers, and other forms of data visualization and social media optimized knowledge products in liaison with data, policy and programme colleagues across the organization. Update and organise UN Womenโ€™s public Trello board for distribution of UN Womenโ€™s global social media content and packages. Follow design trends on social media and experiment with new approaches to keep UN Womenโ€™s social media visually interesting and engaging.

Editorial designย (30 %)

Provide illustrations and layout design for high-priority organizational communication products. Provide branding guidance on different design products. Create templates for print design. Update and edit products and designs.

Functional Competencies:

Ability to create products with the professional use of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator Premiere and After Effects. In-depth familiarity with creating Canva templates. Ability to generate and implement creative and innovative digital design ideas. Ability to develop high-impact digital illustrations, visuals, GIFs and stickers global social media use. Knowledge of the latest visual design standards and trends. Excellent time management, forward planning, and prioritization skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Ability to work effectively as part of a global communication team. Familiarity with image licensing and rights is considered an asset.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of professional experience in a communication role with a focus on visual communication; preferably with previous experience of working on issues related to social justice, womenโ€™s empowerment, and human rights. Experience in creating design artwork for large scale global social media channels required.

Education and Certification:

Masterโ€™s degree or equivalent in one of the following or related fields: Media/Graphic Design, Communication Design, Design Management, Graphic or Visual Communication, Communication or External Relations A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experienceย may be acceptedย in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Languages:

Fluency in English is required.
