Organizational Context
The United Nations World Food Programme is the worldโs largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.
The UX Programmer/Developer Intern will join the Communications Unit at the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (RBP). The Unit is responsible for promoting the impact of WFP's mission and work, as well as its brand, across the region.
The Communications Unit manages communications, advocacy and marketing, using traditional media, campaigns, events, the WFP website and social media platforms in Spanish. Three regional priorities include emergency preparedness and response, climate change adaptation, and social protection to reach zero hunger. In addition, the Unit supports communications focal points in Country Offices in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
Job Purpose:
The UX Programmer/Developer intern will focus on coding and implementing front-end solutions optimizing user experience on WFPโs digital communication platforms, in collaboration with the Communications Unit. Reporting directly to the Communications Regional Officer, the intern will support back-end, UX/UI, and web development improvements across platforms and assist in aligning these tools with WFPโs communication objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Intern will support the Communications Unit with tasks that include:
- Developing and refining user-centered designs for digital platforms to enhance usability and accessibility (create landing pages)
- Developing and optimizing front-end elements for WFPโs digital platforms using JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
- Work on Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
- Creating wireframes, prototypes, and user interfaces for websites and internal tools, with a focus on seamless user experience.
- Ensuring that all design work aligns with branding and accessibility standards, as well as WFPโs communication objectives.
- Conducting usability tests and gathering feedback to iteratively improve communication tools.
- Monitoring and enhancing digital communication platforms to optimize both internal and external user engagement.
- Assisting with platform updates and improvements to maintain a smooth user experience.
- Staying informed of UX/UI trends and proposing new ideas for WFPโs communication platforms.
- Assisting with various projects as needed, including presentations, UX improvement reports, and internal communications support.

Competencies:
- Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Wordpress, Sketch
- Foundational knowledge of Javacript or HTML/CSS.
- Ability to manage and developed website/landing pages UX projects focused on communication tools, interpret user data, and resolve usability issues effectively.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Keen interest in applying UX/UI trends to enhance communication platforms.
- Strong collaborative skills to work closely with the Communications Unit and contribute to team objectives.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, especially in conveying UX or JavaScript recommendations to support communication goals.
Skills:
- Creative, detail-oriented, and proactive.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with the Communications Unit to enhance communication products.
- Basic front-end development knowledge to ensure the implementation of design recommendations.
- Excellent writing and editing skills to support the creation of UX-related communication materials.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Education: Candidates should be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a recognized university, with a focus on UX/UI Design, Computer Science, Web Development, Software Engineering, Communication Design, or related fields. Applicants must have attended classes in the last 12 months and completed at least two years of undergraduate studies. Recent graduates (up to 6 months) are eligible to apply.
Language Requirements
Fluent in Spanish and English working level C.
Terms and Conditions
Interns will be paid a monthly stipend as a contribution towards basic subsistence costs. The amount payable is the equivalent of 14% of the daily subsistence allowance in Panama (currently $32.2 for each day worked).
All internships are in-person (non-remote). The internship is on a full-time basis in accordance with the working schedule of the WFP office.
