SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL (SI) is an international humanitarian aid association which, since more than 40 years, has been providing assistance to populations affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters by meeting their basic needs for food, water and shelter. Particularly committed to the fight against diseases linked to unsafe water, the leading cause of death in the world, SI's interventions provide expertise in the field of access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, but also in the essential area of food security and livelihoods. Present in some twenty countries, the SI teams โ 2500 people in total, made up of expatriates, national staff, permanent staff at HQ, and a few volunteers - intervene with professionalism and commitment while respecting cultural norms.
About the mission
After nearly ten years of conflict in Syria, the impact of present and past hostilities on civilians remains the principal driver of humanitarian needs. North East (NES) and North West Syria (NWS) contexts are both characterized by: (i) ongoing and protracted displacements with low return opportunities, into densely-populated areas where humanitarian assistance is overstretched, (ii) no availability of alternative durable solutions, such as eventual re-installation or re-integration within host community because of social and cultural related issues, as well as the will of authorities to protect local communities, (iii) the depletion of productive assets and savings, (iv) limited economic opportunities, and (v) the widespread destruction and contamination of agriculture and water-related infrastructure by explosive remnants as well as other infrastructures have had a profound impact on the population.
About the consultancy
While it started as a grassroots pro-democracy movement, the Syrian civil conflict has progressively become an international affair. The conflict has left the northern Aleppo countryside area including the Azaz district extremely overcrowded due to displacement which results in increased pressure on all services and infrastructure, the increase in population between hosting and displaced people lead to an increase in need and services, 60% of this areaโs population do not have consistent access to safe drinking water. Problems with the water sources meant most of the population met the majority of their water needs from alternative sources, including costly commercial water trucking and unsafe open wells. Families in northern Aleppo spend Almost 20% of their total income on clean water and getting access to drinking water.
SI has been carrying out operations in Northwest Syria since 2013, from a field office in Suran City (Azaz Governorate) originally remotely managed from Turkey, and Jordan. SI operations include the provision of WASH services (solid waste management, desludging, latrine maintenance, Hygiene promotion) WASH Infrastructure (WASH containers and water tanks); Site improvements (graveling, fencing, and lighting) Water and sewage network rehabilitation and Distributions (tents, hygiene kits and NFIs). At the moment, SI is operating in more than 65 locations under different grants and close coordination with Cluster and partners, supporting Winterization, Shelter, and WASH assistance through in-kind and Cash modalities. This particular action will feed into the existing intervention to better access to bass needs, and hard-to-reach areas and enhance the resilience of the community particularly in In Azaz, Idleb sub-district this project continues to provide life-saving services in more additional areas than in previous locations. According to HNO 2023 report about 70% of the Sewage network is not functional and this has been sought to be one of the main causes or aggravating factors for the cholera outbreak in 2022. In addition, the Management of waste, including that generated by the crisis, may be an issue. Crisis waste can pose public health risks, and impede relief or recovery activities. SI has also noticed communities in the target area using untreated wastewater for irrigation purposes which might affect the public health situation and planned to implement a waste wastewater water treatment unit in NWS to contribute towards more sustainable solutions in the area.
