Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Advisor for West Africa (Bilingual - English & French)

The Position :
Reporting to the West Africa Team Leader, the SRHR Advisor will play an important role in guiding, strengthening and supporting Plan International Germany (GNO) and Plan International’s global capacity and expertise in SRHR programming in West Africa with a strong focus on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights; menstrual hygiene; SRHR in emergency and fragile settings and SRHR advocacy.
The SRHR Advisor role consists of:

  • providing technical advice and capacity building to Plan’s Country Offices and local implementing partners in the field of SRHR;

  • supporting and/or leading SRHR related project proposal development

  • monitoring ongoing GNO SRHR projects in the region for quality assurance

  • undertaking policy, research and networking with technical groups in the Federation and beyond

  • supporting CO´s to mobilise new resources and identify new funding opportunities

This position has no budget responsibility or direct line management of staff but will require effective staff coordination and involve 50% of international travel in the West African Region. Depending on the needs, it is expected that each GNO SRHR project is monitored twice a year by the SRHR advisor to review technical compliance and quality implementation

Main tasks:

Technical advice and capacity building in SRHR:

  • conduct a needs assessment to identify gaps in SRHR in Plan´s Country Offices

  • identify technical /quality gaps during project monitoring

  • provide trainings that are gender and culturally adapted for staff of country offices and local implementing partners (value clarification and supportive transformation)

  • provide technical advice to improve approaches and tools adapted to the context

Support/lead SRHR related project proposal development:

  • work closely with Plan Country Offices staff to support the development of proposals that are innovative, taking into account the latest findings in the field and by providing technical input

  • coordinate with different Plan Country Offices to develop multi-country proposals

  • Support collaborative working between the different departments (Grants Teams, HR, Admin and the Programme Teams)

  • Support Country Offices to ensure proposals align to donors requirements

Policy, research and network:

  • support Plan´s Country Offices and the Plan Federation to participate and be visible in regional and global SRHR networks

  • active engagement in technical expert groups of the Plan Federation

  • develop together with GNO staff and Country Offices staff research-based projects in view of informative-based larger projects

  • network with relevant donors and stakeholders to detect new funding opportunities


Ideally based in one of Plan´s Country Offices, but homebased in the Region is possible as the position requires frequent field and regional travel, extensive visits to field offices and limited international travel to meet with donors and Plan International Germany.

Your profile:

Knowledge & Experience

  • Degree in Public Health, Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health and/or Gender or related field.
  • Proven track record in mobilizing grant funding and designing/managing projects related to sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Experience in project management cycle with a solid grasp of logical frameworks
  • Knowledge of child rights-based approach to programming
  • Experience of SRHR programming in fragile and emergency context in West Africa
  • Experience in data analysis and research
  • Knowledge and proven track record of successful working relations with various donors, particularly multilateral agencies and large Trusts/Foundations, and in-depth understanding of their respective interests, priorities and requirements
  • Knowledge of the West African region, its funding environment in the SRHR field
  • Experience working with German donor is a strong asset
  • Proven experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Bilingual in English and French, knowledge of German is a strong asset
