CARE Canadaโs Global Programs Team is responsible for developing and managing the organizationโs programs in both development and humanitarian assistance focusing on the injustice of poverty and gender inequality. The new Strategic Plan reaffirms our gender-equality focus and our dual-mandate status. Our ultimate impact goal is to support womenโs leadership for a gender-just future grounded in strong programs supporting safety/protection, health and dignified livelihoods across both humanitarian and development settings. The Global Programs unit is responsible for the overall management of CARE Canadaโs global programming circa $50m annual development and humanitarian programming portfolio.
The Senior Advisor, Environment and Climate Change at CARE Canada plays a pivotal role in driving the organization's commitment to gender equality and poverty alleviation through climate-resilient programming. Key responsibilities include overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of climate and resilience initiatives across CARE's global portfolio, focusing on sectors like agriculture, health, and women's empowerment. The role involves staff management, program development, policy advocacy, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the advisor leads internal workplace greening initiatives, fosters partnerships, and represents CARE Canada in climate justice networks, contributing to the organization's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint while advancing its mission.
WHAT YOU OFFER / ABOUT YOU
Masterโs degree in environmental science or management, Environmental Studies, Climate Change Adaptation, Climate Finance, agriculture, International Development Studies, or equivalent work experience At least 5 years of direct experiences on the environment, climate change adaptation and mitigation in the context of food security, agriculture, livelihoods, health, and/or womenโs economic empowerment Excellent communication skills, written and verbal skills in English Direct experience of multi-stakeholder processes and multi-stakeholder collaboration Experience in the development and/or adaptation and/or implementation of frameworks, tools and approaches that aid others adopt good practices for the environment Experience of supporting and training others directly and remotely, with proven experience using formal and informal adult education methods Experience in applying gender lens and tools in resilience programming Demonstrated ability to conduct environmental analyses and strategies Willingness to travel within Canada 1-2 times per year Advanced MS Office skills Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU EXTRAORDINARY
Course work, formal, or on-the-job learning related to participatory facilitation, informal adult education, gender, and / or monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning Ability to work in French, Spanish and/or Arabic is strongly desired Direct experience on project management and/or knowledge management Experience in program design, program development, and fundraising integrating environment Understanding and experience in campaigning and influencing Good knowledge of the international and Canadian climate policy debates, including climate finance and climate resilience, carbon-based consumption and land use, and offsetting Experience working on biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, nature-based solutions and ecosystem approaches Familiarity with GAC, GAC-funded projects and Canadian environmental policies (particularly the Environmental Assessment Act and policy for Environmental Sustainability) A network with Canadian donors and other agencies is an asset, while knowledge of the CARE International Federation will also be considered useful Work experience in an international non-governmental organization Willingness to travel abroad when needed
REQUIREMENTS
Promote and maintain an organizational culture that advances gender equality, reduces power abuse and inequalities, and fosters trust and safety.
