The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program seeks a Research Director and Senior Fellow to play a key role advancing the programโ€™s research agenda at the intersection of the energy transition, energy security, and geopolitics. The successful candidate will work with the director and staff colleagues to define strategies for the United States and global partners to respond to the dual agenda of ensuring the energy transition and maintaining a secure and reliable energy system.

The successful candidate will assume leadership responsibilities to ensure the program produces class-leading research products and meets key goals at the programmatic and individual levels. They will have demonstrable experience executing a research agenda of the highest quality, working effectively across disciplines, developing unique project ideas, and mentoring junior staff and researchers through high-growth trajectories.

The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program offers the successful candidate a platform that is unmatched in its potential to deliver fresh insights to bipartisan groups of policymakers, international policymaking bodies, business leaders, the media, and civil society. We aim to achieve policy impact by producing novel and meaningful research products including actionable recommendations to help ensure the public good.

The salary range for this position is $150,000-175,000.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Strategy and Thought Leadership

Provide strategic insight and guidance for research projects at different stages including idea creation, development of proposals, project management, quality control, and fundraising.

Write, edit, and publish high quality reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and policy analysis to promote research findings and objectives.

Work with Program Director to identify and define areas of new research and engagement.

Supervise junior research staff to produce a variety of research products and disseminate it to key audiences.


Outreach

Serve as an influential voice on energy and climate policy, promoting the Programโ€™s expert analysis with a diverse set of stakeholders, government executives, policymakers, journalists, and the public.

Contribute to the national and international energy conversation by participating in conferences, and workshops, and sharing expert views with donors and prospective donors.

Cultivate an excellent professional network by engaging with external experts and liaising productively with non-resident affiliates, peer organizations, and academic researchers.

Conceive and lead events, such as working groups, panels, and podcasts to advance the programโ€™s research and analysis.


KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

6+ years of demonstrated work experience at a senior level in international or public policy development and research with industry, analytical or research community, or government. Supervisory work is strongly preferred.

Respected expert with substantial knowledge and network related to energy and climate issues.

Entrepreneurial approach with an action-oriented approach to identify challenges, establish priorities, and realize policy-relevant solutions.

Experience in building and maintaining relationships with private sector, governments, organizations, academia, and/or international institutions.

Demonstrated verbal, written, and communication skills, proficient public speaker with an ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from media, industry, government stakeholders.
