The China Power Project is a leading source on Chinaโs foreign policy and power projection, focusing on five main issue areas: military, economics, technology, social, and international image. China Power utilizes both qualitative and data-driven analysis to unpack the complexities surrounding Chinaโs rise.
CSIS is seeking one (1) full-time Research Assistant or Associate to join the China Power Project to start in June 2024.The Research Assistant or Associate will support the China Power Projectโs research, which utilizes quantitative and qualitative tools to examine the evolving nature of Chinaโs power. Key research areas include: Chinese foreign and security policy, cross-Strait dynamics, U.S.-China relations, the Peopleโs Liberation Army, dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region, and other related topics.
Candidates should be motivated self-starters whose research interests align with the programโs work. The China Power Project is a fast-paced environment, and candidates should be resourceful and enjoy a wide variety of analytical and data-driven tasks.
The minimum salary for the Research Assistant position is $55,000, and the minimum salary for the Research Associate position is $58,000.

โขย ย ย ย Conducting research using English and Chinese language sources
โขย ย ย ย Analyzing and writing on issues related to China
โขย ย ย ย Proofreading and copyediting
โขย ย ย ย Tracking issues concerning Chinaโs international affairs
โขย ย ย ย Curating datasets and creating data visualizations
โขย ย ย ย Supervising interns on their daily tasks and managing their workload

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
A GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution Candidates for the Research Assistant level must have at least a Bachelorโs degree. Successful candidates for the Research Associate position will have a Master's degree or a Bachelorโs degree plus 2 years of relevant experience Superb writing and editing skills Demonstrated knowledge and interest of issues concerning Chinese foreign and security policy Previous research and/or publications on China, preferably Chinese foreign/security policy Strong proficiency in Mandarin Chinese Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities Proficiency with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets Strong communication and interpersonal skills Experience with quantitative and qualitative analysisย
Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Familiarity with website development and/or content management systems
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Experience with general-purpose statistical software (e.g. STATA, R, SPSS)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Background in data visualization, especially experience using tools like Datawrapper and Flourish
