Background information/Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is offering a full-time internship opportunity for a talented and motivated candidate, with an outstanding interest in the field of international refugee law and protection. The internship will be within Protection Unit of UNHCR Representation in Ethiopia. This exciting internship is a unique opportunity to gain experience in international refugee law and protection as well as in working within the UN system.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is a global organization mandated by the UN General Assembly, dedicated to protection, and finding solutions for refugees, forcibly displaced and stateless persons. Every year, millions of people are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR is in over 130 countries, using its expertise to protect and care for millions.
Ethiopia is currently facing mutltiple displacements and emergencies including the Somaliland and Sudan Situations. Conflict, drought, inflation, and high food prices have had a cumulative devastating humanitarian impact across the country, driving millions into displacement. According to the IOM latest Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), there were 2.73 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 1.88 million returning IDPs in the country, all of them requiring urgent humanitarian support and solutions.
As of 31 March 2023, Ethiopia hosts 890,309 refugees with more than 90,000 new arrivals from Lascanood region of Somalia undergoing prima facie screening and biometircs registration. UNHCR Representation in Ethiopia with partners support the Government in strengthening the national asylum system to secure institutional protection and provide sustainable solutions, while ensuring socio-economic inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers in the national system. UNHCR also supports the protection and solutions of internally displaced persons as well as returnees and stateless persons in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is one of the three pilot countries selected to rollout the Rights Mapping and Analysis Platform (RiMAP). RiMAP, structured around key refugee rights, provides a set of questions, based on international legal standards and allows for a standardized mapping and analysis of a countryโ€™s domestic laws and policies. The rights categories include right to documentation (including identify, civil and travel documentation); right to education; right to facilitated naturalization and integration; right to work and workplace rights; right to freedom of movement and right to social protection.

Duties and Responsibilities
โ€ข Collect, organize, and analyze relevant national and international laws, policies and practices concerning the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers in Ethiopia for the purpose of RiMAP exercise
โ€ข Enter quality data into Ms word and online versions of the legal analytical frameowrk of the RiMAP platform inacordance with the instructions provided
โ€ข Attend regular meetings relating to the RiMAP
โ€ข Draft and consolidate various documents (reports, summaries, meeting notes, etc.) as may be required
โ€ข Conduct other tasks relevant to the RiMAP and related tasks as may be assigned by the manager

Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
โ€ข Be a recent graduate or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from an Ethiopian university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
โ€ข Have experience or legal research and analysis
โ€ข Have excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
โ€ข Be fluent in English, with strong drafting and editing skills.
โ€ข Have good experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
โ€ข Be highly organised and have good attention to detail
โ€ข Be able to multi-task and to prioritise workload
Interns will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
