Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Albania works closely with the government and civil society to design and implement the laws, policies, programmes and services needed to improve the status of women and achieve global standards for gender equality. Within the One UN Programme in Albania, UN Women Albania leads on gender equality issues, and provides coordination and support to related activities. UN Women in Albania operates in four core areas, focused on womenโ€™s economic empowerment, promoting women in decision making and their active political participation, eliminating violence against women and supporting gender responsive national planning and budgeting.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Programmes and in direct supervision of the Programme Analyst, the intern will work in close collaboration with the Programme Team and specific project managers as relevant ensuring timely support in carrying out proper processes related to advancing the normative, programmatic and coordination work of the office as well as other cross-cutting areas of knowledge management, research, and analysis.

The intern will be expected to undertake the following specific tasks:

  • Support in review and research to contribute to programme development and knowledge management, on topics related to the thematic areas of work of UN Women in Albania (womenโ€™s leadership and political participation, ending violence against women, gender-responsive national planning and budgeting, womenโ€™s economic empowerment, women, peace and security) as well as on its normative and UN Coordination work;
  • Compile information from different sources and produce analytical synopses;
  • Collect information and data to be used for preparation of briefing notes, talking points, and reports as required;
  • Support the production of presentations and other visual documents;
  • Contribute to data entry and database updating/revising of programme related documents;
  • Support preparations for CO activities and events;
  • Support in editing and revision of reports, briefs, and other documents as needed;
  • Monitor, update and support outreach plan for private sector companies in the context of promoting the Womenโ€™s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) in Albania by preparing briefs, help organize meetings and events, and support following up with key new and existing private sector partners;
  • Support promoting effective knowledge management practices in the CO including by ensuring that shared platforms are up to date and effectively utilized by CO staff, and providing support to the implementation of other knowledge management activities;
  • Support outreach and implementation of specific activities promoting youth;
  • Support in additional tasks of the CO Programme Unit, as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, human rights, international relations, anthropology, political sciences, law or other relevant subjects is required. Meet one of the following: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

Fluency in English is required, both oral and written;Fluency in Albanian would be an asset.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
