Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Lebanon Office assists national governments to fulfill their gender equality commitments under the applicable national and international laws, and in furtherance of national and regional implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. A significant element of Lebanonโ€™s Strategic Note is focused on an enhanced strategic approach to communications, with the aim of increasing the visibility of Lebanon CO and public awareness of both success stories and the specific gaps and challenges to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the region. Lebanonโ€™s CO communications activities will also aim to strengthen and expand partnerships with diverse stakeholders in the region and internationally.

In this context, UN Women Lebanon seeks to engage a qualified Translator on a retainer basis to provide high-quality written translation services that support programme implementation, advocacy, partnerships, and communications activities.

The consultant will be reporting to the Communications and Advocacy Specialist and will be supported by the Communications Associate, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work
The Translator will be engaged under a one-year retainer contract and will provide written translation services on a per-assignment basis. Translation services will include, but are not limited to:

Arabic to English and English to Arabic French to English and English to French Arabic to French and French to Arabic

Under the overall supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Specialist, the Consultant will be responsible for the following:

Provide accurate, high-quality written translations of a wide range of materials, including reports, policy briefs, research documents, speeches, statements, presentations, press releases, meeting notes, and correspondence; Translate advocacy, visibility, and social media content in line with UN Womenโ€™s editorial, branding, and language guidelines; Ensure the use of gender-sensitive, inclusive, and non-discriminatory language across all translated materials; Maintain consistency of terminology and style across documents, including the use of agreed glossaries when available; Deliver complete, high-quality translated outputs that are accurate, clear, and contextually appropriate, and fully compliant with UN Women language standards; Meet agreed timelines and deadlines, including assignments requiring short turnaround times; Incorporate feedback, comments, and revisions as requested by UN Women; Ensure confidentiality and appropriate handling of all documents and information; Submit translated documents in the required format and within the agreed timeframe for each assignment. High-quality translated documents that are accurate, clear, and contextually appropriate;

Translations that fully comply with UN Women language standards and gender-responsive communication principles;

As agreed per each assignment Upon completion of the assignment each month, payment will be based on the number of pages translated (1 page = 250 words)

UN Women Lebanon Office will identify translation assignments in advance, confirm the Consultantโ€™s availability, and communicate the scope, expected outputs, and deadlines for each assignment. Payment will be based on the number of translated pages, with one (1) page defined as 250 words, as agreed with UN Women.

Functional Competencies:

Proven expertise in professional translation with a strong command of Arabic, English, and French; Demonstrated ability to apply gender-sensitive, inclusive, and neutral language; Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance; Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines; Capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with a diverse team.

Required Qualifications

Education and Certification:

Completion of secondary education is required; Bachelorโ€™s degree in translation, languages, or a related field is desirable.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of professional experience in written translation involving Arabic, English, and French is required; Demonstrated experience translating documents related to development, human rights, gender equality, or social issues is required; Familiarity with gender-sensitive and inclusive language in Arabic, English, and French is required; Previous experience working with the United Nations system or international organizations is desirable.

Languages:

Fluency in oral and written English, Arabic and French is required.
