Organisational context
Polandโs eastern borders with Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine serve as the European Unionโs external boundaries. The country currently hosts over 1 million refugees from Ukraine, in addition to a smaller number of asylum seekers, refugees from different countries and other persons of concern.
UNHCR has been in Poland for 30 years (since 1992), working with national authorities on refugee-related matters. With the Ukraine emergency, UNHCR has substantially scaled up its presence and operations. It currently has a Country Office and Frontex Liaison Office in Warsaw, two Field Offices in Warsaw and Lublin and two Sub-Offices in Rzeszow and Krakow, with a workforce of nearly 140 national and international staff.
As the UN-mandated agency to provide international protection to refugees, UNHCR leads the refugee coordination in support of the Government-led response, with the aim to complement, support and strengthen the national response to the refugee crisis.
The position
We are seeking a dynamic and proactive team player, with a strong interest in not-for-profit brand and refugee issues, to complete a three-month internship (with possibility of extension) within UNHCRโs Protection team.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Assistant Protection Officer and will play a part in achieving UNHCRโs strategic ambition: contributing to the protection of people forced to flee.
Duties and responsibilities
- Support protection delivery
โข Monitor developments on national legislation that have an impact on persons of concern.
โข Assist the Associate Protection Officer with delivery of trainings and workshops.
โข Assist the Associate Protection Officer on design of information materials to be distributed in reception facilities and asylum centres.
โข Liaise with UNHCR Protection colleagues to consolidate biweekly sitreps.
โข Liaise with partner translation companies to ensure translation of documents and interpretation services to the Protection Unit.
- Individual case management
โข Manage the inboxes of UNHCR Poland, answering to individual queries, supporting timely referrals of protection cases and providing other needed support.
- Support Protection Sector coordination
โข Support the work of the Protection Sector, including reviewing membership as well as keeping a record of the meetings by minutes taking.
โข Support communication with Protection Sector partners more broadly, including by ensuring all communication with Protection Sector partners is conducted both in English and Polish.
โข Supporting the design of the Protection Sector agenda and engaging with key speakers to confirm availability and scope of presentations.
Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required
The ideal candidate will:
โข Be a recent graduate or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest (Law) to the work of the Organization
โข Have excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
โข Be fluent in English, with strong writing and editing skills. Additional languages are desirable, but not essential.
โข Have good experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
โข Demonstrate a genuine desire to learn and develop.
โข Be highly organised and have good attention to detail.
โข Be able to multi-task and to prioritise workload.
โข Be a flexible team-player
โข Be available to work full time for a period of internship
Location
The successful candidate will be based with the team in Warsaw, Poland.
Conditions
The internship is for three months (with possibility of extension) and the start date is January 2024. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30a.m. to 4.30p.m. Monday to Friday. Please note that the terms of internship are defined by UNHCR latest regulation on internships.
Depending on the circumstances, there is a possibility the successful candidate will perform certain duties remotely and/or from home.
Travel and obtaining and renewing current visas and residence permits including all associated costs, are the responsibility of the intern.
Please note that the terms of internship, as defined by UNHCR practice, include the payment of a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (FLTA). In case the intern is sponsored by another source during the internship this will be deducted from the FLTA.The written test might be included in selection process.
