Job Summary:

The Communications and Public Affairs Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as Editor II (senior editor) for a 1-year, renewable appointment. This position is based in Washington, DC. IFPRI Washington D.C has a hybrid work environment that allows staff members a minimum of two days (three preferred) in-office work and the remaining two โ€“ three days remote work. The Editor II will work on a variety of institutional, research, and communications products.

Essential Duties:

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Edit and write text for briefs, brochures, reports, website, and other communications materials.
  • Manage/support layout of publications.
  • Help develop and implement publication, communications, and marketing strategies and policies.
  • Manage freelance editors and designers as needed.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelorโ€™s degree in English, journalism, communications, international development, or related field, plus 5 years of relevant professional experience in editing and writing publications, including in academic publishing; or a masterโ€™s degree in English, journalism, communications, international development, or related field, plus 3 years of relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to edit and write for academic and nonacademic audiences and to understand the intention and nuances of different authors.
    • Ability to understand complex scientific or economic texts and translate them for lay audiences.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow projects through to closure.
    • Ability to work independently and multitask under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent proofreading skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work within a team in a multicultural environment and to collaborate well with researchers/authors.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Strong knowledge of IFPRI subject matter, and experience with or interest in international development.
      • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and ability to follow house style guidelines.
      • Proficient in MS Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, and familiar with Adobe Acrobat Pro.
      • Certificate in copyediting.

        Physical Demand & Work environment:

        • Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time.
        • Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds.
        • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
