Program Overview
WRI Indonesia seeks to support government, private sector and communities in Indonesia to reduce GHG emissions through forest and land management, business operations and better livelihoods. We utilize new technologies, multi-stakeholder approaches and research to provide up-to-date, accurate and reliable tools, methodologies and data so key stakeholders can take part in sustainable development. To achieve this goal, WRI Indonesia is championing an ambitious program to change land use planning and management to be more inclusive and sustainable through several projects. WRI Indonesia also has a joint commitment with the provincial and district governments to support peat restoration, social forestry and sustainable commodity programs.
WRI Indonesia committed to provide support to the Indonesian Government's social forestry initiative that exists as an approach to overcome poverty problem in villages inside and around forest area while also ensuring that the forests will be managed sustainably. WRI Indonesia supports particularly in understanding the indicators or success criteria for social forestry schemes, assessing the challenges and enabling factors of social forestry initiative, and examining the effectiveness of social forestry indicative maps. Through this commitment, We support an increase capacity of the parties in social forestry management.
In South Sumatra region we also support sustainable palm oil governance at the district level by follow up on the program of Designing and Building Successful Jurisdictional Public Private Partnerships (KPS) to Improve Law, Transparency, and the Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia. This will also encourage increased sustainability, legality and transparency in all aspects of palm oil management. In the end, after the district level policy regarding RAD KSB (Regional Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil) has been established, it is also necessary to ensure its implementation and sustainability.
Job Highlight
The Research Assistant will be responsible for providing technical and operational aspects, notably for research-based activities in implementing and managing WRI's main initiatives/portfolio in priority locations and districts. The main responsibilities will include implementing the project plan; conducting and facilitating discussions; conducting a series of Land Use Planning training including preparing materials and implementing RAD-KSB documents, strengthening of community social forestry; support restoration implementation; research and data collecting - analysis and writing communication products and knowledge products.
In terms of administration, the Research Assistant based in the South Sumatra Office in Palembang and will frequently make field visits in South Sumatra province and its priority districts, as well as other places where he may assigned.
Liaise closely with the regional team and other key personnel of the projects, partners implementing similar programs, as well as relevant agencies of the Government, local authorities, and civil society. He will report to South Sumatra and Aceh Senior Program Lead.
What You Will Do
The Research Assistant main areas of responsibility will include the following:
Technical Works and Research (70%)
- Conduct a series of focus group discussions and interviews to support and analyze gaps in the implementation of sustainable commodity management and social forestry development.
- Provide technical assistance and operational aspects on Geographic Information System (GIS) to support land use planning and environmental impact assessment to achieve intended goals in WRI Indonesiaโs key initiatives/portfolios.
- Utilize tools and approaches, such as the GFW Pro, SWOT, AFi (The Accountability Framework initiative) and STDB as appropriate.
- In collaboration with Field Assistant and stakeholder engagement officer, Land-use governance Specialist or social forestry division WRI Indonesia, they provide community facilitation in the development and implementation of community-based social forestry group business models in priority districts in South Sumatra.
- Support to Finalize and implementation of district-level regulations to support the PPP notably the development of Regional Action Plan on Sustainable Palm Oil including the establishment of the task force.
- Support IT/IMS teams to improvement of Social Forestry Database Management System (SI HUTSOS) of South Sumatra under Regional South Sumatra Team
- Provide technical expertise in implementing studies on market value chain, social forestry groups (KPS), social forestry business-based groups (KUPS), and evaluation of social forestry in South Sumatra.
- Work with the other research team in producing knowledge and communication products related to social forestry and project activities.
- In collaboration with national team and support data collection to analyze nature-based Solution impact in South Sumatra
- Support all activity implementing in South Sumatra region.
Project Management and Communication (30%)
- Collaborate with program/project lead and regional team to actively communicate relevant programs and activities, and liaise closely with key government agencies, the partners implementing similar programs as well as civil society organization.
- Planning and designing program/project by translating project logical framework into strategies and work plans in the Provincial and district level, including the risk management for the programs/projectsโ successful outcome.
- Support and assist Commodity team as well as Forest and Land Use Governance Specialist in preparing monthly updates, quarterly report, and final report.
- Support the development of ToR for research activities and/or procurement during project implementation.
- Develop minutes of meeting, BTOR (Back to Office Report), and other relevant documents to support the implementation of program/projectโs activities.
- Facilitate workshop, meeting, and discussion, as well as other events conducted by WRI Indonesia
- Support the project implementation to keep it in line with the expected timeline of the project.
What You Will Need
- Legally able to work in Indonesia
- Bachelorโs degree in forestry, sociology, anthropology, agriculture, agribusiness, environmental studies, geography, or any other relevant subjects.
- Minimum two years of professional working experience in sustainable commodity, social forestry, community facilitation and working with government, community and Civil Society Organization (CSO).
- Experience in facilitating discussion, interview, and able to communicate and coordinate related works with local governments, community, NGO/CSOs, and relevant partners.
- Understand with social forestry, community-based forest management, sustainable development, and other relevant environmental-social economic topics.
- Understand in developing capacity building materials and conducting trainings related to social forestry and land use management.
- Familiar with social forestry, community-based forest management, sustainable development, and other relevant environmental-social economic topics.
- Able to work with a team and able to build team solidity in achieving program goals
- Perform excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Can operate Ms. Office especially Word, Excel, Power Point, dan internet operations, GIS
- Fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Ability to travel when needed.
Deliverables and Timeline
- The Consultant shall submit Monthly Time Sheet and Reports that include activity description done by the Consultant in the last day of each month.
- For technical works, the Consultant shall submit products/results of the works, such as reports, catalogues, data, procedure, forms, photos, and other documentation as indicated in the table of deliverables below.
- Report and products/results shall be submitted in electronic to the Senior Program Lead and Project Officer.
Duration
This position is expected to start immediately with a contract period up to 31 December 2024.
Terms of PaymentDaily rate consultant with maximum of 18 (eighteen) working days per month.

Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.
