Consultancy for a Firm/Individual to conduct Qualitative fieldwork, including Key Informant Interviews and Gendered Focus Group Discussions on Rural Energy use in Ethiopia. This consultancy is RESTRICTED to applicants based in ETHIOPIA only.

Background:

It has long been known that women and men have access to different sources of energy, use energy sources differently and women derive different benefit streams from energy than men. This study will implement gendered focus group discussions (FGDs) in five woredas (Fogera, Dera, ArbaMinch Zuria, Shebedino and Liben Chukula) to assess gendered differences in energy access and use. The study will also implement Key Informant Interviews with public and private sector actors as well as with NGOs on how to accelerate energy access for rural women and men. This study is particularly interested to understand domestic and commercial energy sources, energy use patterns, benefit streams, access to alternative energy portfolios, and related social relations for women and men. The results of the study will be used for the development of the Energy Insecurity Experiences Scales (EIES).

Activities:

The consultant or firm will implement 20 FGDs with women and then with men. This includes 12 FGDs with women and men in the Tana-Beles river basin (Fogera and Dera woredas) and 8 FGDs outside Tana-Beles sub-basin. Key informant interview (KII) will be undertaken with stakeholders at the national and at the district/regional state levels.

Specific activities include:

1. Identify list of Key Informants on gender and energy

2. Support to finalization of Key Informant Protocol and Focus Group Discussion Protocol

3. Translation of consent forms and interview protocols into the local language

4. Implement approximately 15 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs)

5. Implement 20 FGDs

6. Verbatim translation of KIIs and FGDs

7. Develop key themes from KIIs and FGDs

8. Develop draft report in English and obtain comments from IFPRI

9. Revise/improve the report based on the comments received form IFPRI

10. Produce a final draft report

Required qualifications:

Presence in Ethiopia

Good English writing skills

MA or higher in relevant field

Experience with gendered analyses

Experience with drafting reports in English

At least 7 years of experience with designing and implementing qualitative fieldwork in Ethiopia

Demonstrated experience in successfully completing studies on time
