About the program:

The Land & Forests Comms team is a 5-person team that provides communications support and expertise to forest and nature conservation initiatives in WRIโ€™s Food, Land, and Water Program โ€“ including Global Forest Watch, Land & Carbon Lab, GFW Pro, Forest Data Partnership, and other research related to supply chains and carbon markets. The main focus of this internship will be Global Forest Watchโ€™s annual launch of Tree Cover Loss data and analysis: a major impact and awareness moment for WRI, garnering extensive attention from forest defenders, advocacy groups, policymakers, and international media outlets.

Internship Highlight:

This internship allows you to truly become a part of WRI: to understand how a large international research and advocacy organization works, to make connections and work as equal colleagues with staff in a range of disciplines (from communications to research) and to contribute significantly to high level strategic discussions with global visibility and impact.

In addition, the work of this internship allows you to hone your skills in strategic messaging, media relations, writing for a range of audiences, simple graphic design, social media management, project management, and a number of comms and project management tools such as Asana, Emplify, Salesforce, and more.

What you will do:

In this role, you will be embedded in the Land & Forests comms team, and as such will contribute to a range of comms activities and campaigns promoting WRIโ€™s forests research, with a main focus on Global Forest Watchโ€™s release of Tree Cover Loss data and analysis.

You will report to Sr. Comms Manager, Land & Forests (Marcia MacNeil), with Communications Manager, Forests (Stephanie Tan) serving as on-site internship supervisor and point of contact.

Job Duties:

Writing and messaging (50%):

ยท Work with colleagues to draft content for various channels including blogs, website and emails, social media, and other outputs as needed for events and outreach to a range of audiences, primarily (but not exclusively) for the Tree Cover Loss data launch.

Multimedia (25%):

ยท Work with colleagues in the Land & Forests team as well as in WRI Core Comms to support development of infographics, data visualizations, videos and other multimedia comms outputs. (25%)

Project and website management (25%):

ยท Using Asana and other tools such as Emplify and Salesforce, manage comms projects and keep colleagues up to date on progress on promotional activities.

ยท Help implement web content updates using content management systems including WordPress, Drupal, and Squarespace.

What you will need:

ยท Experience and/or demonstrable skills in writing clear, compelling, and grammatically correct and accessible content about a technical subject.

ยท Experience with website content management systems a plus

ยท Experience with graphics software such as Canva a plus

ยท Experience with social media platforms including Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook

ยท You have written and verbal proficiency in English

ยท Currently pursuing a degree in Communications, English, marketing, journalism, environmental studies, or a field related to the deforestation, sustainability and conservation research areas of WRI (graduate program preferred).

ยท Interns at WRI Europe must be registered in a study program with a Dutch college or university for the full duration of the internship.

Conditions of the internship:

  • This is a 4 to 6-month internship starting on 4 March 2024.
  • This internship will be based at the WRI Europe office in the Hague with flexibility to work from home.
  • This internship offers a reimbursement of 700 euros per month based on full-time working hours (32 hours per week).
