Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Programme Development and Management Unit (PDMU), Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna, Austria. Within assigned authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following tasks:
•Organize, design, plan and carry out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data on drugs by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases.
•Participate in the development, implementation and management of statistical data on illicit narcotic crop cultivation, including on the linkages with alternative development projects and programmes.
•Participate in the development and revision of standards on statistical concepts for drug surveys, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research.
•Conduct in-depth analysis on the drivers of illicit drug cultivation, the impact of alternative development projects and linkages with the Sustainable Development Goals.
•Organize and participate in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person.
•Provide training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information.
•Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data is required.
Experience conducting socio-economic surveys is required.
Field experience in illicit crop cultivation areas is desirable.
Demonstrated expertise/experience in sampling methodology and estimation methods is desirable.
Experience of managing large databases for drug statistics and their complex analysis preferably in an international organisation is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
