About this position

We are looking for a strategic leader with a clear track record on combating climate change and demonstrated ability in influencing policy to become the Special Advisor on Climate Change for the IDB Group. By exercising thought leadership and providing high-level advice to the President of the Bank and Senior Executives, the Special Advisor plays a pivotal role to ensure that the IDB Group actively engages on global and regional forums to increase climate ambition to achieve development for Latin America and the Caribbean in a sustainable, climate-friendly way.

Reporting directly to the President, The Special Advisor on Climate Change will be responsible for enhancing coordination and fostering synergies within the IDB Group and with external partners on Climate Change issues in order to achieve greater impact. The Office will be actively involved with initiatives to elevate and advocate with internal and external audiences. It also will support the monitoring of the IDB Groupโ€™s programming process and prioritization of analytical work to ensure Climate Change issues are well reflected in its operational and knowledge generation portfolio. The Office will advise the President of the Bank on the respective Action Plans, development impact of IDB Group financed activities and related corporate affairs.

What youโ€™ll do:

Provide advice to the President of the Bank and senior executives of the IDB Group (VPs and CEOs of IDB Invest and IDB Lab) to advance IDB Group agenda on combating climate change. Operationalize the newly created Office of the Special Advisor on Climate Change, providing thought leadership and direction. Lead the annual planning, implementation, and supervision of the Officeโ€™s work program, while also monitoring the quality of outputs, achievement of long-term goals, and annual objectives and KPIโ€™s for the Office. Collaborate and develop a synergistic engagement between the Offices of the Special Advisors on Climate Change and the IDBG organizational units working on these issues, in particular with the Vice Presidency for Sectors and Knowledge (VPS), the Climate Change and Sustainability Sector (CSD), the Human Resources Department (HRD) and the Budget and Administrative Services Department (BDA) of the IDB, the Strategy and Development Department (DSP) and the Finance and Administration Department (FNA) of BID Invest, and the Strategy and Impact Unit (STI) of IDB Lab. Coordinate the preparation of the multi-year Climate Change Action Plan for the IDB Group as well as its annual reporting. Participate and, in some circumstances, represent the President of the Bank in high-level external events. Support the monitoring of the programming process in relation to IDB Groupโ€™s Climate Change targets. Participate in the prioritization of climate change issues in the knowledge agenda across the IDB Group. In collaboration with the Office of Outreach and Partnership (ORP), coordinate the preparation of the IDB Group positions for G20 and MDB sherpas meetings on Climate Change. Coordinate the IDB Groupโ€™s high-level external communications on climate change issues in collaboration with internal organizational units. Enhance the internal visibility of Climate Change at the IDB Group.

The Special Advisor would operate as per delegation of the President of the Bank and participate at his/her request in Executive Management committee meetings.

What you'll need

Education: A Masterโ€™s degree in global development, foreign policy, ecology, environment, sustainability, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role. A PhD is a plus. Experience: At least 15 years of progressive experience in leading high impact initiatives at the global and regional level towards combating climate change, with at least 10 years at the senior leadership level. In-depth knowledge of the contemporary global, regional, political, and social economic issues related to climate change, with a proven track record of movement building and the ability to navigate complex policy landscapes. You possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively influence and work with all levels of staff and internal and external counterparts, including senior management, the Board of Executive Directors, external stakeholders, among others. Proven record of working collaboratively and fostering a synergistic engagement environment. Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and creatively, using data and audience understanding to influence internal and external stakeholders. Languages: Proficiency in English and one of the other Bank official languages (Spanish, French or Portuguese) is required.
