Background:

Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City. The Youth Education Department provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope of Work:

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 โ€“ 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, field trips and life skills classes.

The IRC is seeking a Social Emotional Learning Teachers to create and implement social emotional learning curriculum for Lower School (Grades K-5). The Social Emotional Learning Teacher will instruct up to twelve lessons each week. The classes will be held between 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm, Monday - Thursday.

Following pre-program training, the SEL Teacher will be expected to understand how their contributions fit into the larger Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) model for supporting students at the Academy and liaise with other professionals accordingly, especially the classroom teaching staff and the Student Support Team.

  • Training: July1-3, 2024: Up to 24 hours of training
    • Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates
  • Main Program: July 8 โ€“ August 16, 2024: 4 hours per day, Monday โ€“ Thursday.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participate in mandatory school programing.
  • Contribute to collaborative planning sessions for all staff training and program meetings.
  • Plan a 6-week culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum.
  • Plan for sheltered instructional approaches (SIOP) for English Language Learners/multilingual learners, grades K-5 in the curriculum
  • Submit daily lesson plans, slide decks, and materials weekly in advance of the date of instruction
  • Perform formative, and post-assessments to inform planning and instruction.
  • Record student observations and Complete the All-Staff program evaluation
  • Review student progress and maintain student data bodies of evidence
  • Complete all required reports on time.
  • Plan for, incorporate, and support Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and volunteer Peer Mentors as they integrate SEL into classroom instruction
  • Participate in one after-school parent/teacher conference evening during the academy
  • Complete weekly progress reports and final report cards for each student

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelorโ€™s in Education, social work, psychology, or related field required; candidate for Masterโ€™s degree preferred
  • 3+ years of classroom teaching experience in New York City public schools or another accredited school system strongly preferred
  • Professional experience teaching social-emotional learning to youth is highly desirable
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners utilizing a Sheltered Instructional (SIOP) approach, highly desirable
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in a relevant language (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.)

Working Environment:

  • NYSA occurs in a centrally located school in New York City. All applicants must be willing to relocate to the New York City area for the entirety of the Academy.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
