The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has an exciting opportunity for a Research Analyst who will be responsible for supporting IWMI researchers by performing Remote Sensing & GIS operations.

THE ROLE

Perform GIS/RS operations at IWMI\u2019s Digital Innovation Unit along with other team members, including, but not limited to, geometrical corrections, projection standardization, orthorectification, image classification, application of standard algorithms/models, time series analysis using multi-sensor satellite imageries, and preparation of standard outputs. Develop spatial models processing and analysis of bulk data. Create geospatial datasets and cartographic outputs from primary/secondary data sources. Perform bulk download and processing of spatial data using existing R/Python scripts. Provide technical support to researchers in carrying out complex geospatial analysis for various research/management projects at IWMI headquarters and in the regional offices. Assist in the collection, compilation, evaluation, interpretation, maintenance and distribution of spatial and non-spatial data (and metadata) through the Water Data Portal while also adhering to IWMI/international standards. Assist in training and capacity building activities of the Digital Innovation unit. Perform other related assignments as required

Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following:

A bachelor\u2019s degree in geoinformatics, information technology, geography, agriculture, water resources or environmental sciences with a focus on GIS/databases/information management, masters preferred. At least 3 years of relevant professional experience at an entry-level position in the fields of GIS and RS. Working experience in Esri\u2019s ArcGIS and associated extensions, and ERDAS IMAGINE; knowledge of other GIS and remote sensing software such as ENVI, QGIS, SNAP, GRASS etc., will be an added advantage. Basic knowledge of R or Python and its relevant packages to access, download, and analyse various spatial/non-spatial datasets Knowledge of the challenges posed by global environmental change, on the one hand, and rapidly developing GIS/RS techniques, on the other. Knowledge of Metadata standards and platforms.

Essential:

Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. A positive attitude, a solid work ethic and a demonstrated capacity to learn new technologies as well as take on additional responsibilities over time. Self-motivated, enthusiastic and be able to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Committed and reliable, with good organizational skills and time management.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a nationally recruited staff position and only citizens of Sri Lanka are encouraged to apply. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes transport and health insurance. The duration of the contract will be for a three-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funds.
