Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Communications Section (COMMS), External Outreach Service (EOS), Executive Direction and Management (EDM) of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Communications Section.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

โ€ข Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services promoting human rights and the work of OHCHR.
โ€ข Researches, compiles and presents basic information for use in the preparation and production of OHCHR communications products/services including major campaigns and other communications initiatives to promote human rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
โ€ข Coordinates briefing requests and presentations; participates in the planning and coordination of major exhibits; liaises with relevant departments/agencies.
โ€ข Drafts and edits reports, production schedules, and correspondence related to the planning and production of exhibits, briefings and presentations on Human Rights as well as other public information activities including Human Right Day, International Day against Racial
Discrimination and other major events.
โ€ข Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at briefings, special events, exhibits, conferences, etc. including in relation to human rights commemorative events.
โ€ข Manages, updates and further develops internal databases including of digital file management and social media accounts.
โ€ข Drafts and edits content under supervision; assists in maintenance of Internet applications;
generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
โ€ข Provides general office support; responds to complex information requests and inquiries; processes, drafts and finalizes correspondence and other communications; sets up and maintains files/records, organizes meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.
โ€ข Coordinates administrative services, including preparing, monitoring and processing various requisitions, service contracts and payment
vouchers, coordinating special assignments and related travel authorizations, etc.
โ€ข Provides guidance/training to junior staff and interns.
โ€ข Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of 5 years of experience in public information, communications, journalism, public relations, or related area is required.

Two years of experience within the United Nations Common System or similar international organization is desirable.

Experience working on communications campaigns is desirable.

Experience in digital communications is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and knowledge of French are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE FOR FIVE (5) MONTHS, WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION.

RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO APPLICANTS BASED IN THE DUTY STATION.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test in English at the United Nations Headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, maybe accepted in lieu of the GGST.

โ€ข Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
