UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Programme Unit of the UNHCR Country Office in Mexico.

Organizational context

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (the UN Refugee Agency, also known as UNHCR) is an intergovernmental organization with a mandate to protect refugees and stateless people worldwide. Since 1950, the agency has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of more than 15,000 people in 130 countries continues to help and protect millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people. UNHCR provides lifesaving assistance, protection, shelter, food, clean water, education, and medical care to some of the worldโ€™s most vulnerable.

UNHCR also provides assistance to refugees who want to return home when it is safe to do so and helps integrate refugees within their local host country or resettle to a third country when returning home is no longer an option. Non-governmental organization (NGO) partners work with UNHCR around the globe to assist and protect refugees and internally displaced people.

The Programme Unit within UNHCR Mexicoโ€™s Country Office supports the planning and implementation of UNHCRโ€™s operational activities in Mexico. Among its responsibilities, the Programme Unit works closely with local and international partners in the design and implementation of projects in the country. Together with other technical experts, the Programme team plays a key role in the monitoring of results of UNHCR interventions through the development and implementation of a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan.

The position

The intern will support the design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools that will enable reporting on core organizational indicators for activities implemented by UNHCR or its funded partners in Mexico. The intern will become familiar with UNHCRโ€™s Results Based Monitoring principles, the organizationโ€™s policy on M&E, and will gain good insight over UNHCRโ€™s projects in Mexico as well as UNHCRโ€™s work with partners, with a particular focus on reporting and monitoring.

To effectively fulfill these duties, the intern will also work closely with the Information Management Unit to coordinate necessary actions, ensuring that M&E tools are implemented and functioning optimally. The intern will need to demonstrate a strong analytical approach, using a range of data management and visualization tools to convert data into actionable insights.

The intern should possess excellent organizational skills, strong data management capabilities, and an eye for detail. Proficiency in the use of data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Kobo, PowerBI, Tableau, GIS) is highly desirable. S/he should also have an excellent command of English and Spanish.

Duties and responsibilities

โ€ข Support the compilation of information on indicators measuring UNHCR activities, including updating databases and liaising with Information Management and other UNHCR units and field offices.
โ€ข Support the development of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) indicators to measure results of UNHCR projects.
โ€ข Provide support in preparing data reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with UNHCR reporting standards.
โ€ข Contribute to the development of reporting guidance for UNHCR projects, including translating from English to Spanish indicator elements and metadata and developing user-guides.
โ€ข Support project monitoring activities by maintaining and analyzing information relevant to UNHCR projects ensuring data integrity and alignment with organizational objectives.
โ€ข Collaborate in creating visual data resources, such as maps, infographics, and dashboards, to facilitate the interpretation and presentation of data insights.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
โ€ข Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
โ€ข Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills

โ€ข Proficient knowledge of English and Spanish.
โ€ข Experience or skills relevant to data management, project management or administration.
โ€ข Proficient use of MS Excel
โ€ข Experience with data collection tools (e.g., Kobo) and data visualization platforms (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau) is highly desirable.
โ€ข Ability to create and analyze reports using statistical methods and strong understanding of quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday and from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm on Friday (35 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Mexico City.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
