Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. In the context of the recent UN Reform, the South Africa country office started to engage itself in the UNCT South Africa, under the UN Development System (UNDS), to respond to the country needs and priorities, intended to attain a responsive United Nations that delivers better results for People and Planet, with more sustainability, higher efficiency and integrated support โ delivering as one. In line with this, UNEP recognized the need for expanding its presence and contribution to other Southern Africa countries in order to amplify elements of environmental sustainability towards the objective of achieving SDGs. The transformation of the South Africa country office to sub regional office will provide a coordinated, integrated and cohesive support to the 16 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. This Internship position is located at the UNEP office in Pretoria, the Sub-Regional Office, with the intended purpose of supporting the coordination and implementation of UNEP activities in the SADC Region. The daily responsibilities will vary according to needs of the UNEP South Africa team and depend on the individuals' background as well as the internship period. Working from the UNEP Pretoria Office, the intern will support the UNEP South Africa Office on the implementation of activities related to its programme of work in the Southern Africa region. The Intern, under the direction and supervision of the Head of UNEP office in South Africa will be required to undertake the following specific tasks: Support project management, including backstopping implementation of project activities and monitoring for the work undertaken by UNEP in the SADC region. Assist with the organisation of meetings and outreach events, and high-level Forums; (Workshops, Webinars, Retreats, etc.) and World Environment Day (WED) commemorations, for Environmental Sustainability by preparing meeting agendas, summaries, minutes and follow up communications as required. Support Advocacy Campaigns (Education/Awareness/Sensitizations/Trainings) geared to elevate environmental issues to the same level/s as social and economic issues in each of the 16 SADC Member States. Developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers, and report writing. Assist in preparing concept notes and short briefings across UNEPโs programmatic areas. Assist in the development of communication and outreach materials such as stories, social media posts and newsletters highlighting the work and results of UNEP South Africa Office; Undertake any additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Head of UNEP South Africa office, and in accordance with the Internsโ interests and experience. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโs level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
