Position Overview
USAID Sustainable Environmental Governance Across Regions (SEGAR) Activity seeks to advance Indonesiaโs own development goals of balancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable land use with inclusive economic and livelihoods development. USAID SEGAR contributes to the 2020 โ 2025 USAID Indonesia Country Development Cooperation Strategy, Development Objective 3: Environmental Sustainability Improved, and Intermediate Result 1, Natural Resource Management Improved.
To achieve the overall goal, USAID SEGAR will achieve the following two objectives:
โข Strengthened inclusive environmental governance in targeted subnational jurisdictions that advances biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, and sustainable land use.
โข Increased implementation of environmental and social sustainability goals within private sector natural resource commodity production supply chains that reduces threats to biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions from land use.
USAID SEGAR works in four regions with total twelve intervention districts:
โข Aceh: Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Utara, Aceh Timur
โข West Kalimantan: Ketapang, Kubu Raya, Sanggau, Sintang
โข East Kalimantan: Berau, Kutai Timur, Mahakam Ulu
โข Central Kalimantan: Seruyan, Kotawaringin Barat, Katingan
The Private Sector Engagement Lead will oversee the private sector component of SEGAR as the lead technical specialist responsible for achieving expected results. The anticipated duration of this job is from February 2024 โ December 2025, with the possibility of extension. The position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia and will require travel to the project sites on occasion to liaise with and provide technical support to the project site teams. This position will report directly to Chief of Party (COP); it will be assisted by short-term technical assistance (STTA) recruited and managed by Pact according to the project needs, potentially to include the following: Senior Strategic Engagement and Partnership Advisor and Senior Sustainable Finance and Investment Advisor. The Private Sector Engagement Lead will also coordinate with members of the LT Private Sector Engagement team, including but not limited to the Conservation Enterprise Specialist.
Key Responsibilities
โข Oversee the private sector component as the lead technical specialist for achieving expected results related to increasing market-driven solutions and sustainability in natural resource commodity supply chains.
โข Coordinate and foster relationships with relevant private sector partners across Indonesia to encourage collaboration with USAID SEGAR in ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, and greening supply chain projects.
โข Develop and oversee the design and structure of business cases tailored to specific prospects, funding opportunities, and potential partners, and develop a project investment portfolio to generate and scale significant growth in non-traditional investments related to sustainable commodities.
โข Coordinate and manage relationships, ensuring the successful implementation of collaborative activities with existing private sector partners.
โข Promote private sector engagement with local government and other stakeholders for mutually beneficial collaboration to improve natural resource governance and environmental and social sustainability goals.
โข Participate in and convene forums that connect investors and companies with innovative portfolios of low-emissions projects.
โข Provide technical inputs to Core Management Team and ensure regular communication with other sector leads and site managers on private sector engagement.
โข Oversee consultants in their implementation of project activities.
โข Contribute to the preparation and submission of annual work plans and periodic progress reports and assist with monitoring relevant program indicators and evaluating program results.
โข Design and structure business cases tailored to specific prospects, funding opportunities, and potential partners, and develop new and innovative business models to generate and scale significant growth in non-traditional investments related to sustainable commodities.
โข Advise on financial, performance, and other risks to deals and identify appropriate risk mitigation and management plans.
Basic Requirements
โข Bachelorโs with 7+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience includes 3 years of management or a Masterโs and 5 years experience. Advanced degree in economics, agronomy, finance, or another field related to private sector engagement.
โข Extensive experience and established with local, regional, and international private sector actors along natural resource commodity supply chains committed to environmental and social standards.
โข Experience in developing business models and financing mechanisms to shift sustainable practices in collaboration with national, regional and local financing institutions.
โข Proven ability to work with private sector actors, all levels of government, NGOs, and smallholder communities, building mutual understanding of environmental and social best practices.
โข Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, orally and in writing.
โข Ability to travel on occasion domestically and regionally.
โข Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, to a range of different audiences.
โข Advanced degree in economics, agronomy, finance, or another field related to private sector engagement
โข Extensive experience and established networks with local, regional, and international private sector actors along natural resource commodity supply chains committed to environmental and social standards
โข Expertise in environmental and social standards for natural resource commodity supply chains and advising private sector actors in applying these standards
โข Experience in developing financing mechanisms for commodity producers, from smallholders to large producers, to shift sustainable practices in collaboration with local and regional financing facilities
โข Proven ability to work with private sector actors, all levels of government, NGOs, and smallholder communities, building mutual understanding of environmental and social best practices
โข Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, orally and in writing
โข Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia
โข Advanced degree in economics, agronomy, finance, or another field related to private sector engagement
โข Extensive experience and established networks with local, regional, and international private sector actors along natural resource commodity supply chains committed to environmental and social standards
Preferred Qualifications
โข Experience with carbon and/or carbon-related projects
โข Experience in private sector-led establishment and scaling of HCV and HCS approaches and multistakeholder essential ecological area.
โข Experience working with USG funding.
