The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring a Principal Data Scientist to join our Customer & Asset Management Applications team in the Banking department.

The role is based in Basel, Switzerland, however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.

Purpose of the job:

Through a combination of business and technical expertise, to perform and enable advanced analytics involving Banking data products.

    Principal accountabilities:

    • Collaborate with Banking IT management to define the data management and science strategy aligned with overall business objectives.
    • Develop and implement a roadmap for advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives.
    • Conduct in-depth data analysis, including feature engineering and model evaluation.
    • Perform business analysis and data modelling using deep domain knowledge to shape data products.
    • Design and implement machine learning models to solve business problems.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business leaders, engineers, and analysts within Banking and in other IT organisations across the Bank.
    • Communicate complex technical concepts and findings to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Lead research initiatives to explore new data sources, algorithms, and technologies.
    • Keep up-to-date with major technology trends relevant to the business area for input into IT strategy.
    • Liaise with external suppliers and be involved in negotiations as well as definition of terms for provision of their services.
    • When necessary, lead a project team and ensure that team objectives are met. Coach and train team members.
    • May be required to be a Product Owner/Manager. Provides strategic direction and takes responsibility for the product delivery and stakeholder management.
    • Maintains overview of their broad technological expertise, including market trends, or changing business needs of Banking. Represents Banking in Bank-wide IT projects / committees.
    • Ensures adequate interaction with the relevant groups in ITS and Corporate Security with regard to system design, integration, standards and change management. Develops and maintains good relationships with peers of IT service providers, consultants, central banks, and other institutions. Represents the BIS in external events.
    • Deputise for the Head of the team on operational matters in their absence.

      Qualifications, skills, and experience:

      • University degree in computer science, information management, statistics, business or related field.
      • Strong work experience in data science, machine learning or predictive modelling and working with business users in Financial institutions.
      • Good programming skills in one or more programming languages, e.g. Python, R.
      • Excellent knowledge of the Banking business, financial instruments and ideally Asset Management.
      • Very good writing skills including the ability to write system and user documentation in English.
      • Experience working in an agile, DevSecOps environment utilising CICD and continuous improvement and close collaboration.
      • An excellent team player with good communication and interpersonal skills. Comfortable liaising with and engaging staff across the organisation at all levels.
      • A hands-on, practical approach.
