Desired candidate profile

The Interpreter/Protection Clerk (LICA3), as an integral part of the Protection/Field Team, will assume a wide range of responsibilities. The staff will provide interpretation/translation for staff members as needed, in particular related to registration activities. The incumbent can also be requested to issue appointments and assist with reception of refugees during registration activities. Furthermore, the incumbent will assist in liaison with refugee and refugee leaders, so strong interpersonal and communication skills are desirable.

Ability to effectively communicate from Karen, Karenni and/or Burmese to English and vice versa is required. This includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an accurate and efficient manner. As extensive travel is expected, itโ€™s essential that the incumbent demonstrates flexibility and a strong team spirit.

Operational context

Thailand hosts along the Thai-Myanmar border some 90,000 displaced persons (refugees) from Myanmar over the last three decades. UNHCR Offices are engaged in a range of activities to support the Royal Thai Government (RTG) in ensuring their international protection and seeking solutions to the protracted refugee situation. UNHCR Thailand is planning a verification exercise in all 9 refugee camps along the border, jointly with the RTG. Therefore, extensive travel to the different refugee camps located along the border will be expected.

Standard Job Description Interpreter Assistant Organizational Setting and Work Relationships The Interpreter Assistant normally report to a higher level local or international staff. The incumbent supports the operation with translation and interpretation related activities. All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. Duties - Interprets and/or translates from newspapers, written reports, magazines etc.; - Interprets oral conversations, discussions and interviews especially when attending meetings with high ranking officials, diplomats and others; - Travels with international staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance, as needed; - Arranges meetings, both internal and external, some involving high-ranking officials and takes minutes/notes; - Meets official personnel at the airport and facilitates immigration and customs formalities; - Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility; - Perform other related duties as required.
