Department

The position is located in the Labour Migration Branch (MIGRANT), within the Conditions of Work and Equality Department (WORKQUALITY). WORKQUALITY brings together the ILO's technical expertise in the areas of economic and labour market analysis, working conditions, labour relations and collective bargaining, labour migration, disability inclusion, gender and ethnic/racial equality, HIV/AIDS in the workplace, and policy integration. MIGRANT has the primary responsibility within the Office for the formulation and implementation of the Organization's policies and decisions concerning migrant workers and refugees, as well as for the design, implementation and evaluation of national migration policies. These are carried out in accordance with the ILO Multilateral Framework on Labour Migration, the provisions of Migration for Employment Convention, 1949 (No. 97), Migrant Workers Convention, 1975 (No. 143), Migration for Employment Recommendation, 1975, (No. 86) and Migrant Workers Recommendation, 1975, (No. 151), and of other relevant labour standards.

MIGRANT undertakes analytical work on the economic, employment and social aspects of international labour migration with an emphasis on its implications for development, labour markets and worker rights protection; provides related technical advisory services to its constituents and other concerned stakeholders; carries out development cooperation activities; organizes policy forums, constituent capacity building, research and training, and convenes meetings on labour migration issues; and publishes and disseminates guidance and good practices reports.

Within the Labour migration Branch, this internship position will contribute to collecting country practices and developing and disseminating knowledge products and policy guidance tools on the social protection of migrant workers and refugees. This position will also support development cooperation projects in Africa and country program outcomes on labour migration.

Learning Area

As an intern in the Labour Migration Branch of the ILO, you will be an integral part of a team in charge of backstopping labour migration projects in Africa and supporting the implementation of the ILO Strategy on extending social protection to migrant workers, refugees and their families. Throughout the internship you will become more familiar with ILOโ€™s institutional and informal coordination mechanisms; enhance your technical knowledge about key concepts concerning decent work for migrant workers and how multilateral organizations are coordinating to further social protection for migrant workers and refugees through different approaches; gain a deep sense of the ILOโ€™s mandate on labour migration, migrant workers and social protection and how to communicate messages on these issues to a wider audience; interact with other organizations that are working on labour migration and social protection, including employers and workersโ€™ organizations; get acquainted with the work of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team; further your skills in the areas of project design, implementation and evaluation, writing and communications.

You will be exposed to a variety of different projects and activities conducted in the field, and you will be supporting knowledge development and dissemination through various communication channels. You will be contributing to the development of technical materials and documentation of country practices and lessons learned.

Under the direct supervision of the Labour Migration Specialist, you will be gaining experience by supporting work of relevant specialists related to the following broad areas and tasks:

Knowledge generation, dissemination, and capacity building

  • Development of technical materials (studies, guidelines, briefs, policy analysis, data collection and analysis, communication pieces, teaching materials) on different topics/priority areas and directed at different audiences (e.g. governments, workers organizations, business, CSOs, academics);
  • Capacity building and training materials on social protection for migrants and refugees, directed to government, trade union and employersโ€™ organizations and contribute as resource person to relevant training and capacity building events.
  • Document good practices and lessons learned on extension policies in various regions.

    Technical assistance, project monitoring and implementation

    • Technical backstopping of relevant projects related to labour migration with a particular focus on social protection components of these projects.

      Advocacy and communication

      • Support the dissemination of ILO strategy on extending social protection to migrant workers, refugees and their families and other relevant policy guidance tools.

        Perform others task that may be assigned by the supervisor and in line with MIGRANT priorities

        Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

        Education

        Political or social science, economics, law, development studies, international relations, or other relevant discipline. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago

        Experience

        Any relevant work experience and knowledge of labour migration/social protection issues, knowledge of the Africa region would be an advantage

        Languages

        Excellent command of English (both written and oral). Good knowledge of a second working language of ILO such as French would be an asset.

        Competencies

        Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Capacity to work on own initiative as well as cooperate as a team member. The ability to work in a multicultural and time sensitive environment, and gender-sensitive behaviour and attitudes are also required.

        Selection process:

        Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

        If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

        Stipend:

        As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

        Insurance:

        Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
