The Internship is for the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme in the Education Outreach Section, which is part of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. The Outreach Programme was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education in order to help prevent future acts of genocide. The Outreach Programme leads the United Nations observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on 27 January and develops multifaced initiatives and educational resources. Its global network of partnerships with civil society, governments and Holocaust education institutions enables the Outreach Programme to extend its work to a wider audience.
The internship is for a minimum period of four months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Outreach Programme and availability of the candidate, with substantial preference being given to candidates who are able to commit to the maximum six-month period, preferably starting in November or December 2022.
The internship is unpaid and full-time (in person).
Interns work five days a week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
Working under the supervision of the Programme Manager, the intern will assist the Programme with its daily tasks.
The selected intern may perform some of the following functions:
- Assisting with planning and organization of online, in-person and hybrid events, including researching for speakers, preparing invitations and promotional materials
- Conducting research on thematic issues related to the Programme’s principles and mandate, including the history and legacies of the Holocaust, survivor memories, human rights, antisemitism, racial justice, genocide prevention, and misinformation and disinformation.
- Drafting, formatting, editing and posting web content and news stories
- Drafting social media content for the Programme’s Facebook and Twitter accounts
- Providing general office support (processing, drafting and finalizing correspondence and other communications; setting up and maintaining files/records, organizing meetings etc.
• Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
• Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
• Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in international relations, history, human rights, Holocaust or genocide studies, journalism, communications or related fields;
b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in a related field (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Applicants must also:
- Be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Experience studying, researching or working on topics related to the Holocaust, human rights, history and international relations is desired.
Skills in writing for social media platforms and websites, and multimedia production is desired.
Experience working on events is desired.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations official languages is desirable.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another.
