The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Programme Development Branch, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya.
Depending on his/her profile, the intern will support the activities related to the development, implementation and monitoring of programmes/projects, of strategies and work programmes, projects, tools, outreach activities of UN-Habitat, and ad hoc operational support to the related functions of the team in charge of urban crisis prevention and response (Subprogramme 4 in UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2023), within the Programme Development Branch, Global Solutions Division.
The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Programme Development internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Subprogramme 4 coordinator and the programme management officer, the Intern’s main duties include:
- Drafting knowledge products and working documents, reports and correspondence or concept notes.
- Mapping and analysis of UN-Habitat current portfolio in the field of urban crisis prevention and response, to support the identification of good practices and scale up of interventions.
- Desk studies (of documents, reports, and internet searches) related to urban crisis/urban migration, specifically for planning for future projects.
- Support to arranging for and participation in internal and external meetings. This will involve both organizational and substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical support, reporting and follow-up actions.
- Support in communications and coordination with the UN Country Offices and other UN entities.
- Draft communication products and events programmes to support dissemination of projects, tools, reports on different substantive areas and for all regions. This also includes the elaboration and roll out of a communication strategy for the team.
- Support the planning and coordination of all related teams and engagement with partners in projects at headquarters, in the regions and countries.
- Provide research and short resumes for advancing programme development, review and comment on upcoming tools and reports; draft meeting reports and minutes; support organization of events and meetings.
- Collection of best practices and drafting of short texts on successful projects on different thematic areas (migration and displacement, urban recovery, etc.) and supporting dissemination and publishing (e.g. lay out or website contents).

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Urban, Humanitarian or Development Studies, Social or Political Science, Business Administration, Public Information or any other related fields of study.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
