Organizational context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. Promoting respect for international protection norms in European Union law and policy is of vital importance to UNHCR, and the agency, accordingly, provides its views on a wide range of issues related to access to Europe, asylum, refugee protection, resettlement and integration.

The position
The role of the intern is to support the Protection Unit in Sub-Office Krakow in its daily activities. The work of interns is expected to contribute to UNHCR delivering on its mandate for refugees and asylum-seekers, returnees, stateless people and internally displaced persons, while helping the Organization remain relevant in the competitive humanitarian environment.

UNHCR provides interns with a learning opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience related to their academic program or future work in a field related to UNHCR's mission. By being directly exposed to the work of the Organization, interns have the chance to develop their skills and aptitudes

Tasks:
โ€ข To support protection monitoring and research activities on a wide range of subjects related to refugee protection, border management, solutions, asylum policy and practice relevant in the EU context, including international and European refugee and human rights law;
โ€ข To support the coordination role of UNHCR and mapping of humanitarian actors working in geographical area of responsibility (AoR) of the Sub-Office Krakow
โ€ข To review and analyze relevant reports issued by UNHCR, EU and international bodies, civil society organizations or the media;
โ€ข To provide statistical analysis of refugee and migration trends in the AoR of the Sub-Office in Krakow;
โ€ข To assist in the implementation of various initiatives undertaken by the UNHCR Sub-Office in Krakow, designed to promote and assess the application of international and European refugee and human rights law;
โ€ข To assist in the preparation of trainings, meetings, events, and conferences as well as support to follow-up action
โ€ข To assist in the drafting of minutes of meetings, reports or advocacy documents prepared by UNHCR;

Duration
The UNHCR Sub-Office in Krakow offer this internship assignments for 6 months starting on 15 April 2024 and ending on 15 October 2024. The Intern will be based with the UNHCR Sub-Office in Krakow and in accordance with the working hours established by the UNHCR office where the internship is located. The working hours are to be discussed and agreed upon between the intern and the manager.

Administration
Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period. UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to medical insurance of interns. A copy of proof of a valid medical insurance covering the period of the Internship Agreement is required by UNHCR. UNHCR does not cover the costs of medical evacuation of interns; therefore, interns working in locations other than their country of residence must ensure that their medical insurance covers emergency medical evacuation. Furthermore, the medical insurance selected by interns should provide the necessary geographical coverage for both accident and illness.

Upon completion of the internship, interns are provided with an official UNHCR attestation letter and upon request and agreement with the supervisor a letter of recommendation. The incumbent will be required to hold a valid medical insurance covering the full period of the internship.

Required qualifications
In order to be considered eligible, the candidate must meet the following criteria:
โ€ข Be a current student or a recent graduate (completed studies within two years) of a graduate/undergraduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and have completed at least two
years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization (law, international relations, political science or other relevant field as psychology, foreign language);
โ€ข Demonstrated interest in refugee protection;
โ€ข Excellent research and analytical skills;
โ€ข Excellent oral and written Polish and English skills;
โ€ข Ability to communicate in Ukrainian will be an asset.
โ€ข Not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.
