Intern, Humanitarian Affairs and Advocacy (8-week Internship)

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE:

The Intern (Humanitarians Affairs and Advocacy) will provide assistance to Save the Children Canadaโ€™s Humanitarian Affairs and Policy, Advocacy, and Governmental Relations Teams.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Conduct research and develop briefs on policy, political positioning and trends in the Canadian humanitarian sphere, for example funding trends to local organizations, new partnerships models, and analysis of Canadian policies on specific issue areas.ย Monitoring emerging humanitarian crises and providing relevant analysis, to enhance readiness of SC Canada Humanitarian Advisors to respond to crisis.ย Supporting in the development of tools and materials for active projects or advocacy processes, including stakeholder mappings, literature reviews and background research.ย Conduct initial reviews and editing Save the Children and/or country office documents. This includes proofreading, formatting, consolidating feedback received, compiling graphs, tables and annexes.ย Review and update documents related to the functions and operation of the Humanitarian Affairs Team.ย Undertake administrative tasks such as taking meeting minutes, updating intranet SharePoint site, drafting communications materials as necessary. ย Time will be allotted to participate in online trainings, webinars, etc. as well as in-house trainings in order to boost the internโ€™s capacity.

Qualifications include (but are not limited to):

Post secondary education in the areas of International Development, International Relations, Humanitarian Assistance or Human Rights and/or related equivalent field and a graduate degree is a strong assetย Understanding of childrenโ€™s rights standards and principles or humanitarian principles, programming and policyStrong research, writing and analytical skillsDemonstrated interest in humanitarian programming and advocacyAbility to communicate in English. French, Arabic and/or Spanish an asset.ย Good interpersonal and communications skills, thrives in a multicultural environmentKnowledge of Global Affairs Canadaโ€™s Results Based Management approach or legislative environment an assetExceptional communications and written skillsExcellent organizational, planning and time management skillsAttention to detail and an ability to manage multiple priorities effectivelyAbility to work in a team and/or independentlyProficient in Microsoft Office Suite

REQUIREMENTS

This role is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. This is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help youth in Canada develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.

Eligibility Criteria:

As this internship is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, eligible candidates must:

be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employmentbe a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employmenthave a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. Note: International students are notย eligible for this program.This position will be paid $16.55 per hour.Home based internet connection and access to a laptop required.ย Will be required to work at our Toronto office, time to time, with reasonable notice.ย
