Org. Setting and Reporting

The Intern will work in the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director (ODG/OED), Policy and Inter-Agency Coordination team. Under the overall guidance of the Chief of ODG/OED and Strategy Advisor to the Executive Director and the Policy Coordination Officer, and under the supervision of the Programme Coordinator (Gender). The envisaged starting date for the internship is in July 2021 for a period of six months.

Gender equality and women's empowerment is a universally agreed objectiveโ€”deriving from the Charter of the United Nations, which unequivocally reaffirmed the equal rights of men and womenโ€”and is confirmed in a number of commitments taken through, among others, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women of 1979, the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, various resolutions and decisions of the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 5 ("To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls"). Gender equality is the overarching and long-term development goal, to be achieved on the programmatic side through gender mainstreaming in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all policies and programmes, and in the United Nations Secretariat by aiming at achieving a 50/50 gender balance in staff at all levels.

As an organization UNODC, has identified gender as an issue cutting across all aspects of its programmes and activities. As of May 2017, a Global Programme entitled Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in UNOV and UNODC (GLOW25), hereinafter referred to as the Global Programme on Gender, was established in the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director (ODG/OED), UNOV/UNODC. The first UNOV/UNODC Strategy for Gender Equality and The Empowerment of Women in December 2017 and an Action Plan was adopted in December 2018 to operationalize the Strategy.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time (five days per week - 40 hours).

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities

In the framework of the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director, the intern shall undertake the following duties:

- assist with background research of the global developments around gender equality and empowerment of women, with a particular focus on the UN system practices and policies;
- assist with the work of internal and external communications for the Global Programme on Gender Equality and the empowerment of Women in UNOV/UNODC;
- assist in supporting the Global Programme's events from a communications perspective;
- assist with background research on potential communications channels and identifying possible ways to enhance use or propose new ones;
- perform other ad-hoc assignments subject to the requirements of service, including providing substantive, administrative and logistical support in organizing Global Programme's events and trainings conducted both virtually and on site.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:

โ€ขApplicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
โ€ขBe computer literate in standard software applications;
โ€ขHave a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
โ€ขHave a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English oral and written proficiency is required and fluency in French is an asset. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations
