UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Energy and Environment Unit of the Technical Support Service under the Division of Resilience and Solutions (DRS) at UNHCR Bangladesh.

Organizational context
Some 952,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar were residing in Bangladesh by year end, representing an increase of 33,000 people compared to 2021. 923,000 were hosted in 33 highly congested camps in Coxโ€™s Bazar District vulnerable to climate shocks while the remaining 29,000 refugees lived on the island of Bhasan Char.

UNHCR and its partners continued to support the governmentโ€™s response to the humanitarian and protection needs of Rohingya refugees who remained entirely reliant on humanitarian assistance for protection, food, water, shelter, energy and health.

This intern position will focus on the energy and environment activities of UNHCR Bangladesh, with a focus on supporting research and activities related to climate action mainstreaming into the UNHCR Bangladesh operations activities.

The position
UNHCR Coxโ€™s Bazar office is seeking an intern to support research and mainstreaming of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts into the operational activities in the Rohingya refugee camps. The intern will support the Energy and Environment unit with ongoing energy and environment projects, provide research on climate and environment fundraising, support community engagement and ownership within environment projects and support other units with evidence and approaches for climate action mainstreaming. Areas of support will include approaches and nature based solutions for community resilience toward climate adaptation and mitigation within the camps, supporting ecosystem rehabilitation and conservation, and ensuring access to sustainable energy solutions, in line with and contributing to the 2023-2025 Strategy for Climate Action in Coxโ€™s Bazar, Bangladesh developed by the Energy and Environment Technical Working Group (EETWG).

Duties and responsibilities
o Support ongoing environment projects within the Energy and Environment Unit.
o Provide field implementation support with partners to UNHCR Bangladesh environment projects in the areas of reforestation, conservation, human elephant contact mitigation and watershed management.
o Support community engagement and ownership processes within existing environment and climate related projects.
o Support the Energy and Environment unit with monitoring, learning and evaluation of ongoing environment projects.
o Support climate action research and mainstreaming within the UNHCR Coxโ€™s Bazar operation.
o Provide research support to identify gaps in climate mitigation, adaptation and environmental protection activities within the UNHCR Bangladesh operation.
o Consult with different units within UNHCR and wider sectors within the Rohingya response to understand and document existing climate action related activities, ongoing challenges, and identify best practices.
o Provide research support on feasible and cost-effective approaches and nature-based solutions (NbS) toward climate mitigation and adaptation within the Rohingya refugee camps and surrounding hosting communities.
o Support development of Standard operating Practices (SoPs) for climate action mainstreaming within relevant UNHCR Bangladesh operational priorities.
o Conduct research on climate and environment related financing and funding mechanisms.
o Support the Energy and Environment unit on research into environment and climate related funding sources which could be considered for future funding and scaling of existing climate and environment related projects in the Rohingya refugee camps.
o Support knowledge sharing and learning on the next of climate change and environment within the Rohingya refugee response.
o Document best practices and lessons learned which can support wider climate mainstreaming in the UNHCR Bangladesh operation and wider humanitarian response.
o Support UNHCR to share learning and potential for climate mainstreaming with key stakeholders, including humanitarian and development agencies, government, the private sector and NGO partners.
o Provide data and technical support to for wider advocacy on climate mainstreaming within the Rohingya Joint Response Plan.

Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

โ€ข Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
โ€ข Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in the field of environmental science, climate change adaption and mitigation, conservation, sustainable development or natural resource management, or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.00am to 5:00pm Sunday to Thursday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Coxโ€™s Bazar Bangladesh.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
