The Programme Monitoring and Communications Internship is under the project AIRCOP - Airport Communication Programme. AIRCOP is a multi-agency project implemented by UNODC in partnership with INTERPOL and the World Customs Organization (WCO). It aims at strengthening the capacities of international airports to target and intercept high-risk passengers, cargo and mail, as a contribution to the fight against illicit drugs and other illicit commodities (such as wildlife products or falsified medical products), terrorism-related threats (such as arms or potential foreign terrorist fighters), trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. It also aims at facilitating communication and coordination between origin, transit and destination countries to disrupt cross-border illicit flows and criminal networks.
The internship is expected to start in September 2021 under the supervision of professional staff in the office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, five days per week (40 hours).
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

The AIRCOP Intern will assist the AIRCOP team in defining and implementing efficient communication and will contribute to the further development and implementation of the project. He/she will work closely with project officers as well as national and sub regional counterparts across West and Central Africa. He/she will also assist the Global coordinator in charge of 5 active regions (Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East and South-Eastern Europe) and expansion to new regions (in particular Asia).
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
•Contribute to the monitoring, coordination and evaluation of AIRCOP activities in Africa
•Assist in developing communication objectives for AIRCOP
•Draft, edit, design, and produce publications such as newsletters, leaflets and brochures
•Maintain and update the AIRCOP webpage
•Support the organization of capacity-building events, including letters, agenda, monitoring training delivery etc.
•Contribute to fundraising concept notes, donor reports and other types of substantive documents
The United Nations Core Competencies include:
•Planning and Organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and work to tight deadlines.
•Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and making and defending recommendations.
•Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree as defined above. (Official proof from the university in support of one of the above options has to be attached to the Inspira application)
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and French is required for the internship. Knowledge of local or other regional language(s) would be an asset.
