Position Title: Improvement and Implementation Science Advisor for Mental Health
Reports To: Mental Health Co-Director
Location: Employees in this role can work from our Boston, MA office, remotely within the U.S. or hybrid of these two options.

Position Overview
The Improvement and Implementation Science Advisor for Mental Health will be responsible for providing senior-level expertise in quality improvement and implementation science for global mental health programs across Partners In Health (PIH). The Advisor will work with PIH cross-site teams and site-based clinical mental health teams to develop the systems, tools and human capacity to evaluate and enhance quality in mental health care delivery, as well as documentation of impact. The ideal Improvement and Implementation Science Advisor for Mental Health will be experienced in both the delivery of mental health care and clinical interventions in global settings and the development and evaluation of strategies to improve care quality, including analytics.
The Improvement and Implementation Science Advisor for Mental Health will report to PIHโs Mental Health Co-Director. They will also have opportunities to work closely with PIHโs Director of Strategic Information Systems, U.S. Coordination Site teams, and collaborators at academic and clinical institutions. The Improvement and Implementation Science Advisor will travel regularly to PIH Care Delivery Sites for in-person collaboration with our Care Delivery Site clinical and operational teams.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead efforts to implement data-driven mental health interventions across PIH clinical sites, including psychiatric, psychological (primarily cognitive-behavioral based) and psychosocial interventions. Depending on the Improvement and Implementation Science Advisorโs background, this may include training and/or clinical supervision on evidence based mental health interventions. This will also include ongoing support in the design and implementation of routine mental health data collection tools and systems across PIH sites.
- Lead the ongoing development of cross-site mental health performance indicators and manage all aspects of an indicator database, including data cleaning, aggregation, analysis, visualization, and reporting, to demonstrate accountability for the attainment of program aims and ensure continuous improvement of programs.
- Lead quality improvement (QI) initiatives for mental health, including accompanying PIH mental health teams to incorporate measurement-based quality improvement practices. This will also include participation in QI training and consultation opportunities, evaluation of care delivery skills, data management, analysis and presentation to assess progress toward meeting QI goals for mental health.
- Collaborate with PIH mental health teams to develop and execute high-quality program evaluations, including translation of findings into changes in practice.
- Lead the adaptation and implementation of digital health tools and health information systems in mental health across PIH sites, including user support.
- Facilitate shared learning among site-based teams, including identifying best and promising practices in global mental health care delivery, best and promising practices to accelerate quality improvement in mental health care, and teaching and training in implementation science strategies to improve care.
- Lead integration of improvement and implementation science initiatives into the day-to-day operations of the cross-site mental health team, including collaboration with other clinical and operations teams and supporting cross-site mental health initiatives such as the Mental Health Learning Collaboratives, integrated trainings, dissemination of results with diverse stakeholders, grant-writing, and other needs.
Qualifications
- Ph.D., Psy.D. or equivalent in psychology, public health, social work, or related disciplines, or a PMHNP, M.P.H, M.A., M.S., M.S.W. or equivalent with at least 2-4 years of experience in global health, global mental health, or mental health care in large systems required. Recent doctoral graduates and other early career professionals are encouraged to apply.
- Experience providing mental health care is strongly preferred, and experience with cognitive behavioral models of care is helpful.
- Experience working on community-based global mental health projects and/or experience in resource-limited settings and capacity-building roles preferred.
- Experience with data collection in resource-limited settings; designing and using electronic medical records; database management and manipulation of large datasets; designing and carrying out statistical analyses and qualitative analysis preferred.
- Excellent computer skills including experience with database and analysis tools (e.g. Microsoft Excel and/or PowerBI, R, STATA, SPSS, Dedoose, NVivo), and with digital health platforms (e.g. DHIS2, ArcGIS, CommCare, OpenMRS, Bahmni).
- Strong administrative, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and flexibility to work in complex and diverse settings, especially the ability to oversee complex organizational projects and to handle multiple assignments.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or French preferred.
- Passionate about community building, sustainability and instilling a community-based approach to global mental health and interest in social justice strongly desirable.
