About this position

The Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest is responsible for generating a portfolio of high quality, creditworthy, and environmentally and socially sound projects that result in significant development impact. The business cycle goes from the identification, selection, origination, and execution of transactions to their monitoring. INO follows a matrix model, with three segment divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy, Financial Institutions and Corporates, and two transversal divisions: Financial Products and Services Division and the Portfolio Management Division.

The Infrastructure & Energy Division is responsible for originating, structuring, and closing development finance transactions (loans, guarantees, equity) in LAC in the following sectors:

  • Energy
  • Social Infrastructure (Education & Health)
  • Transport
  • Water & Sanitation

    The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Head of Infrastructure and Energy (Southern Cone countries).

    What you’ll do:

    The consultant’s scope of activities shall include, but not be limited to, providing support for the identification, appraisal, structuring, negotiation, closing, disbursement, and monitoring of infrastructure and energy projects, mostly structured as limited recourse project finance transactions in the sectors listed above. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Project Origination:

  • Prepare marketing materials: teasers, financial proposals, and presentation to prospective clients.
  • Conduct industry and market research and assist Investment Officers in business development efforts including research relative to prospective projects and sponsors, gather and review relevant market and financial data and assist with the preparation of operations summaries and preliminary desk evaluations of potential projects.
  • Build and maintain quality client relationships to ensure responsive client service and to improve new business opportunities.

    Structuring Process:

  • Prepare terms of reference and lead the selection of external consulting firms (independent engineers, market consultants, insurance consultants, tax & financial model consultant, etc.) that support the investment team in the appraisal of project finance operations.
  • Work with other team members and the external consulting firms to perform the due diligence process of the transactions.
  • Participate in negotiations with clients to gather necessary technical, legal, economic, financial information as assigned to assess the merits of potential lending or equity investment projects.
  • Create, review and/or adapt financial models and prepare sensitivity analyses required in connection with the credit assessment of the transactions.
  • Review and analyze historical and projected financial statements and perform financial analyses for project finance transactions and/or corporate financing;
  • Assist Investment Officers in the preparation of documentation for IDB Invest’s internal approval processes.
  • Maintain internal system updated.

    Support the Financial Closing Process

  • Assist Investment Officers during the closing process of the transactions.
  • Assist with financial closings and disbursements for approved lending and investment projects by assisting with the verification that client comply with all consultant conditions.

    What you'll need

  • Education: At least a bachelor’s or equivalent degree with specialization/major in finance, accounting, business administration or economics. Master’s degree (or MBA) will be considered a plus.
  • Experience: Between 2 and 4 years of progressive experience in a financial institution or in the finance department of a private sector company, in particular in energy, transport, social infrastructure, water and sanitation sectors.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

    Requirements:

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Argentina, Brazil or Chile or a citizen of one of our 48-member countries with residency or legal permit to work in Argentina, Brazil or Chile.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
