The GeoAI specialist will be assigned to work on one of the divisionโs projects, namely, the Arab Development Portal (ADP) project and will be under supervision of the lead of the geospatial insights team. The Specialist IC will work on the full-stack development of an AI-powered geospatial analytics and interactive web mapping platform, enabling policymakers across the Arab region to access dynamic geo-intelligence for decision-making. DSDSD that is part of ESCWAโs broader modernization and innovation efforts, providing advanced analytics and decision-support services within ESCWA, other UN entities, and Member States. Aligned with the UN 2.0 agenda and grounded in strategic foresight, DSDSD leverages data-driven insights, emerging technologies, and scenario-based planning to anticipate trends and proactively inform policymaking and operations. Its core functions include data integration and management; data quality assurance; advanced analytics and modeling; machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions; real-time dashboards and performance reporting; geospatial insights, data visualization and the design and development of specialized digital decision-support tools. Through these capabilities, DSDSD empowers evidence-based decision-making supporting sustainable development outcomes in the Arab region. Duties and responsibilities: The GeoAI Solutions Specialist will be responsible for the following tasks: โข Build an AI-enabled multi-layer GIS web stack integrating temporal, socioeconomic, and earth observation data. โข Develop automated ingestion, preprocessing, and data enrichment pipelines. โข Engineer scalable GeoAI models and feature extraction algorithms. โข Deploy interactive web maps and dashboards using OpenLayers or similar, fully integrated with backend APIs and geospatial servers (ESRI/Azure environment). โข Manage geospatial database architecture and real-time data capabilities. โข Conduct system integration, testing, documentation, and user onboarding. Qualifications/special skillsA Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Geo-Informatics, Engineering, or a related area is required. A minimum 5 years of professional work experience with GeoAI and integrating GIS and AI/ML is required. Practical experience in the use of Python, geospatial libraries (GeoPandas, Rasterio, GDAL), and AI frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow) is required. Proven experience with OpenLayers, GeoServer, in production deployments, and API development is required. Practical expertise in ESRI, GEE, QGIS, GRASS GIS, and strong understanding of ArcGIS Pro is required. Familiarity with satellite data processing and geospatial standards (WMS, WFS, WCS) is desirable. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary policy-driven environments is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required and knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
